What the critics have to say about the new Star Trek Discovery (600 words)

in #review7 years ago (edited)

I just took a look at the reviews of Star Trek Discovery on IMDB to see how the first episode has been received - and it was not good. Overall it got a mere 6.8 Stars out of 10 (>1.000 votes) which is catastrophically low.

To give you a quick overview I copy+pasted out the review titles plus if the critics "loved it" or "hated it" (that's a category you can select when writing a review). The results are quite telling, since there are currently 62 reviews, but only seven of them are positive. Here they are:

LOVED IT:

  • pretty good show
  • Federation GOOD, Klingon BAD
  • Star Trek has finally Returned!
  • Best Trek ever
  • To everyone talking crap about my favorite show.
  • Star Trek is BACK with a BANG! But CBS Money Grab Could Kill This Show
  • i will be damned if i pay to watch it but its not bad

Three of the reviews came from the USA and each one from the UK, Poland, Canada and Russia.

HATED IT:

  • Just Awful
  • What a steaming pile of uber crap fest garbage
  • Dear God NO
  • sad, United States
  • This isn't Star Trek - this is Star Wars with Star Trek characters
  • Worst Star Trek to date
  • Boldly Going Psychotic
  • Hated it
  • Liberal political correctness again missing the mark and inetentionally dividing us....
  • Star Trek discovery is a big waste of time.
  • Why is this called Star Trek
  • Thank you for killing my hope of being able to relive my childhood.
  • was excited, now not so much...
  • What the ???
  • Islamophobic undertones detected
  • Half of us won't be able to watch it
  • As expected, politically correct garbage...
  • Did Not Enjoy It. Why? Read On.
  • I gave this an honest chance but..
  • Not the Star Trek we have come to love in the past.
  • If I'm to subscribe, one episode wont due.
  • Not interested in an 15 hour movie
  • Great special effects, but the story and characters make no sense.
  • fair at best
  • It's a reboot, and you probably won't like it
  • rough start
  • Lame, and I wouldn't watch it if it was free.
  • Absolutely Incredible -- Incredibly Dull, That Is
  • First episode is in the can-will you watch any more?
  • Klingons?
  • That was a huge disappointment
  • One Big Problem
  • STD review from a Trekker who remembers September 8, 1966.
  • Not a great start, but...
  • A Typical Modern Storytelling Fail
  • First Episode Lukewarm
  • Eh.
  • Mildly interesting but not worth subscribing to
  • Mediocre but watchable.
  • My opinion is neutral so far, but Star Trek purist will hate this series.
  • Not awful, but, like the new movies, spends too much time on action and dazzle
  • Neutral
  • Good start. Will keep watching.
  • wow!!!
  • Liked it Overall But the Jury is Still Out

Among the critics are 21 from the USA, five are from Canada, two from the UK and each one from Belgium, Brazil, China, Sweden and Australia.

Could the show be more successful outside the United States?

So far, the number of reviews on IMDB is relatively small, but it looks like the show could be more popular outside the USA (and Canada). Among the "hated it" raters were two thirds from the USA, while more than half of those who "loved it" came from other countries.

This is a huge problem and could kill the show very quickly, since it is sitting behind a paywall and right now is only accessible in North America.

Star Trek Discovery summed up in three sentences:

red-nax from the UK wrote:

"Fans of the 40 years of Star Trek before the reboot movies should brace themselves for Discovery. Fans of Star Trek from the reboot 2009 movies will find themselves at home."

And Nominalis from Canada wrote:

"I really liked 'The Orville' a lot, I can't wait for the next episode."

I'd say the show is a dead man walking.

Sort:

I watched the first two episodes of discovery today. While the look and feel of the show is awesome, I feel it failed in one crucial aspect, the first two episodes have set up a serlized series. In contrast successful Star Trek series (in my opinion) have been episodic. This issue aside, I am glad there is a new series because more Star Trek makes the world a better place

I watched the first episode now too. The critics were just too inconsistent, so I gave it a shot and I agree with you, the feel is awesome. But that Michael chick is an epic stupid arrogant cunt. OMG I hate her. She's the space prototype for all those entitled SJW chicks from single parent households who grew up to hate men (or aliens who aren't just like her). I doubt that I can watch too many more episode with her...

In overall I liked the 2 first episodes. The CGI is great, makeup is even greater. story so far is great as well and I hope it keeps it up on all points. But I didn't like the Klingon speach, for me it didn't sound as powerful as the few words/sentances/songs in the other series/movies. But the fight between the ships. Wonderful and epic!
