My Memories With CHRONO TRIGGER

in #retrogaming6 years ago (edited)

The timeless RPG of time. The game in many people's top three all-time favorites. Chrono Trigger was one of the first RPGs I played and had many memories with it.

WARNING: Some Spoilers

But only for early game. And I keep them at minimum.

A Short while ago I bought the PC Version of Chrono Trigger. After SquareEnix released their final patch and made this version of the game compete with the quality of other versions. (Except the NDS one.)

When I started writing on Steemit, one of my self-imposed rules was to keep my talk about games I don't legally own at minimum. Maybe that's why I don't make weekly reviews.

~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I can proudly say:
"I OWN A CHRONO TRIGGER COPY"
~~~~~~~~~~~

I haven't started playing it yet. A game this great don't deserve unfocused play-through. So in this post, I'll talk about my previous encounters with Chrono Trigger.

How it All Started

I touched on that in my PS1 childhood & Final Fantasy Journey posts. My cousins gifted me a PS1 Disk Box containing both Chrono Trigger & Final Fantasy IV.

My English was so bad at the time I understood nothing of FFIV story. On the other hand, Chrono Trigger had Dragon-Ball-like art, fluid animation and with how its story was presented I understood the important bits. As a child early teenager the story felt good, different and fun.

"That's only one world."

My PlayStation disk wasn't used many times. It was slow, the disk was scratched and I basically spent two hours each time on the introduction festival. Enjoying my time as the silent hero and the girl he just bumped into.

At the trail one/two hour(s) into the game. The younger me was amazed and truly scared of how each NPC stated my devious actions accurately.

"You're allowed to stay a silent hero,
Everything you DID will be used against you."

That moment defined Role Play Gaming for me.

From that time. I'm not playing only for myself, I take my character's identity and behave as I think they'll behave in their own world. For me, RPG is not "just a game."

Age of Emulation

At some point in my life, I was introduced to emulation. After I emulated many GBA games. I found out that Chrono Trigger was originally a Super Nintendo game and it was the reason I started SNES emulation. (That or some Dragon Ball game.)

I didn't finish Chrono Trigger the first Time. I was stuck many times and needed to grind sometimes. But with each hour I spend on the game: The characters, the world, the timeline. feels more lively and Epic!

Just how awesome this X attack is?!

At that time, I was like everyone I knew in my country, the games were cheap so I didn't know that emulating them without owning them first was wrong. Now I don't pirate games as much. I have an ever-changing self-imposed ruleset toward piracy. But that's not our topic today.

From the Screen to The Heart

Each time I played Chrono Trigger I feel the urgency to save the princess, the need to break from the jail, the dilemma of being a young man in a body of a frog, the evils around that must perish & the enthusiasm of an inventor finding a semi-working robot.

The last FMV I reached when playing the PS1 ver. (Spoiler)

The first time I finished the game was while playing the SNES version. After losing someone important of the party I was at loss, as everybody in the party was. I didn't finish many optional quests but the one I did was the most important one, the final thing to do before fighting Lavos.

The music also helped. The battle system is my favorite ATB system. Everything had a unique feel that you want to keep in your heart. The game even starts beautifully!

"Good morning Crono."

For whom the Bells tolls...
It tolls for thee.

--- "No man is an Island."

When I finally was ready for the final boss, it was a great fight. Lavos deserves all the hype he got in the game because IT is too hard to beat! I'm so excited to try him on again. Crono & Lavos are timeless characters, you can't not enjoy a timeless game again!

Final Thoughts

I loved CHRONO TRIGGER!
Here I am hoping to fall in love with it again,
after the sadly glitched PC version has been fixed.

I think all of you readers have at least heard the name before, what do you think about Chrono Trigger. Would you like me to review it or make a series of posts about it as I did with FFVIII?

Oh man I love Chrono Trigger! Its epic and Glenn splitting a mountain!! Damn its over 9000!

Me too!! Not sure if I watched it in the PS1 version or the just after I finished the SNES and saw all the missed scenes online!

This is one of the best JRPG game to this days. Game is like on hard mode from begining, only for True gamers.

And I also Love that Akira Toriyama crated aanimation and design for characters. As for me, as a fan of Dragon Ball Is huge :D

I totally agree, that's why I didn't like that they imported the mobile version to the PC, felt like they turned the best game into the worst thing ever. But if what I heard the PC version is good to play now!

yeah, thanks for the patch.

Also log time ago there was "Chrono Trigger: Resurrection" project. Fanmade remake of Chrono in full 3d, but this project was closed about 2005 if I remember correctly

It's sad companies had to destroy these fan made projects...

According to law if they treated them on case by case bases (and let the good ones slip by) they'd lose more money than if they shut everything down before it get any support. Actually if they made some "good" cases, they might lose the right to object to the "bad" ones as well.

And believe me, fans can do terrible things... See how many mods of Skyrim can turn it into an X-rated game.

Still keeping this game, box, map, and booklet on my shelf. It gains value and nostalgia every day. Half the characters make me cry thinking about their tragic timelines, especially the damn frog.

Wish I still have the game box (PS1,) I don't remember what happened to it.

make me cry thinking about their tragic timelines, especially the damn frog.

Frog, he's one of the most tragic, most bad-ass person you might see, sweeter than kid Gohan, Stronger than Vegeta, (Both from DBZ.)

I do like Chrono Trigger and it is one of the few games I managed to beat. I got fairly far in Final Fantasy 6 and I like that game as well but I got stuck right at the end leveling up like 9 characters I never used for the final showdown and just got bored. Never really had that problem with Chrono Trigger .

Yeah for Trigger every character got the time needed to get strong enough for Lavos.

Yeah! Best SNES rpg by far. Ff6 loses out mostly due to random battles. I love to see any chrono content, heh.

Some people prefer FF6 but I haven't finished that to judge.

Nice post as always @ahmadmanga! Nice touches on the RPG and gaming aspects of Chrono Trigger and how that impacted yah.
Flyin' by!.gif

Yeah, maybe this game is the reason I like RPG so much!

Great post as always though if I'm honest I don't like how much you focus on piracy and how you don't pirate games and how emulation isn't legal and so forth... I suppose is to make people think more of buying your games with Steam?
Anyways, I'm getting off topic, chrono trigger is really a great game, all of the secrets in the game and the multiple endings make it a really wonderful one... a fact that somehow you missed to mention despite being one of the main selling points of the game.
Lol I loved that trial at the beginning of the game for the very same reasons you did, I was a teen back then and I was like, wow, there is no defense against what I did :D

Thanks for telling your honest opinion, but I didn't think of my shop at all writiting that, and yeah now it feels I foucessd too much on Emulation and piracy that it looks that way. But I won't tell anybody to stop piracy unless they have no reason to do so. Everyone has their reasons.

Yes, I knew I was forgetting something important, "multiple endings" in an RPG and "New Game +" are one of those things I'm amazed that they exist is a SNES game! I didn't get more than two endings (I got 7 in Chrono Cross with save states.) But the existence of New game + is something I should have talked about.

Maybe in a next post?

You can't "talk" your wait out of that trail, even if everyone said "No Guilty." you're still reminded of what you did in other games.

Indeed, for an SNES game the fact of the multiple endings and New Game + was revolutionary, specially because it actually worked with the idea of the game of time travel and only in New game + could you get the full amount of endings and alternative routes.
Chrono Cross was an odd beast for me, maybe due to the graphics or the combat system... but another GREAT game too.

I'll be looking forward to see it :D I finally finished the one I was writing since two weeks ago and now I want to write about Fate/Extra, both games and anime :D

That's exactly it!!

You reminded me, I should watch that anime!
