Sunday Cook #10 Portuguese octopus with potatoes in the oven - Happy New year!

in #recipe7 years ago (edited)

This Sunday I cooked

Polvo à lagareiro (Octopus with potatoes in the oven)

I wanted something special and different for this weekend so I decided to cook octopus, one of my favorite dishes.

Guess what?!

This is on of the traditional dishes from Portugal!! Anyone visiting Portugal will be able to find this in a local restaurant. It's easy to cook and combines garlic, cilantro and olive oil flavors in a very vibrant and fragrant sauce!

I already cooked this before, but this time I totally nailed it!

I get some inspiration in this two recipes: recipe 1 and recipe 2, but I've made some changes (I always give a personal touch!) and it get perfect!!

Ingredients

  • octopus (2 Kg)
  • small potatoes
  • 1 medium onion
  • parsil
  • cilantro (lots of it)
  • 15 garlic cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • sal (to taste)
  • olive oil (lots of it)

Preparation

  1. Clean and wash the octopus. Place it in a pan with boiling water seasoned with a sprig of parsley and the unpeeled onion. Let it cook about 1 hour (if you put in a pressure cooker, it will cook in 35 minutes). Usually, they say the octopus is cooked when the onion gets soft.

  2. Wash the unpeeled potatoes and place it in another pan with water seasoned with a little salt and cook. When they are cooked, drain the water and set aside.

  3. Preheat the oven at 180°C / (350ºF). In a different pot add chopped cilantro and 5 garlic cloves (smash the other 10). Add the bay leaf and cover it with olive oil.

  4. Place the octopus in a baking dish. Slightly smash the cooked potatoes and place it in the baking dish. Bring the olive oil sauce to boil and as soon as it starts to boil sprinkle the octopus and the potatoes with this sauce.

  5. Put in the oven about 30 to 35 minutes. Once in a while drizzle with their own sauce.

    6 - It's ready to serve!!

It wasn't necessary, but I served this one with galician cabbage (very traditional at Christmas time).

Happy New Year!!

I will come back with another Sunday cook delicious :D Stay tuned!!

What is Sunday Cook?!

These Sunday Cook project began with a strong will to contribute to Steemit with one of my best features and to share a part of my life with the community. At the same time, I want to show Portuguese cuisine to you! I'm not a professional or nothing similar, I only can assure you that I'll do my best!

On Sundays, I like to prepare more elaborate and delicious food. It requires time and patient. Usually, I cook some traditional Portuguese food, or at least with Portuguese inspiration :) I try to do it in a healthier way, using the minimum fat as possible, and normally I pick some recipe and transform it. I like to make it practical and leave the minimum dishes to wash...as I don't have a dishwasher machine!
During the week I don't like to spend much time cooking (no time at all), that's why I get totally motivated to cook on Sundays!!

OMG! I'm so glad you posted this recipe. I tried Octopus only once, And I didn't like the flavor. But I often wonder if it was poorly cooked. So I've been wanting to make it on my own, I'l have to use this recipe . So I can try it again!

If you try this recipe you will see how tender it gets! Only add the salt in the end, when placing the octopus in the baking dish!! I really love olive oil with cilantro and garlic flavor! Hope you like it too!

When I decided to cook this dish I wasn't thinking in SCC, and probably i shouldn't use the same recipe for SCC and Sunday Cook. This time I will only watch and support others!

@liliana.duarte yes, you're right about not using that, thank you for your honesty!
Very much appreciated!

Great Sunday post. Here in Chile, they call octupus, pulpo. I have only had good pulpo once, and it was marinated for 24 hours plus, then grilled and it wasn't too bad. I'd like to give your method a try someday. Hope your new year is off to a good start

Thank you very much!! I definitely recommend this method and seasoning. I only salted the "polvo" before putting in the oven (only a small amount of salt because potatoes were already seasoned). This cooking method with the onion left the octopus very tender!! I was surprised how soft it gets! Thanks for commenting! All the best in 2017 for you and yours!!
