Reading with Luke - Very Bad Bunny
Now that Luke just turned six years old his reading level has definitely impressed me. He is reading books by himself and often requires little to no help with words. The most impressive thing about it is that Luke goes to a French First Language school so he does not learn any English phonetics or words while at school.
Every night before bed I sit down with him and read one or two books. I treat this as a chance for learning, he looks at it as a chance to stay up a little bit later. Either way, I like to think that we are making great memories together.
I started recording Luke reading at night and making videos to keep as memories. Every now and then I share one of them on Youtube.
The one I am sharing today is his current favourite book. It is The Very Bad Bunny by marilyn sadler. If you like the book please check your local bookstore and pick up a copy!

Thanks for the comment. Reading is a great way to learn vocabulary. He also speaks French which is why I make sure he reads in English every night.
This is good.. I speak French. And because I learn French at school.
Now I have a problem reading in English. There is a big difference to read French and english

Luke is a very good reader for 6 years old! And the fact that he is being taught in a French school. You have done a great job in encouraging him to read. All my sons were read to every night from the time they were born. All are voracious readers and now my grandchildren are too. Keep up the good work. You are doing an amazing job!
Bedtime story is indeed a good time spent with our little one...

I do it with my girls too. It's not easy to choose a book that can interest all 3 of them. Sometimes I will let YouTube do the job. Turn off the lights and lie in bed and then listen to the story. After finish listening, I will go through with them about the story (still lights are off).
Darryl, We need to talk! Are you or your wife a francophone? I am not, nor my wife, but I've been leaning towards putting our kids into french school, I do know other anglophone parents that have had success with this, but my wife is totally against it, I'd be curios to here your experiences.
My wife's french is pretty good but we are both anglophone. I was pretty worried about it at first but it is the best thing that we have ever done.
Almost everything is communicated by email so Google translate is a good friend of mine. You can always call the school or go and meet with the teacher if you don't understand something.
My son it grade 1 can already explain his homework to me in English, so I dont always need to know what it says to help him. He is the translator.
I also think that it is great to help develope their brain and learning skills. An english speaking child in JK or SK at an English school is learning new things and stimulating their brain maybe 20-30% of the day. Shapes, colours, patterns, numbers.... but when they are also learning in French they are learning and stimulating almost all day. Even while playing with their friends they have to think of words they know and how to phrase things. They have to pick up and learn non verbal communication as they dont always know or understand what is being said.
There are kids at the School who speak Spanish as a first language at home, Learn French at school and still speak great English.
The more I think of it, the more this would be a great topic for a longer post.
I would highly recommend it to anyone that is considering it.

How long till he was communicating with is friends there, weeks, months?
I'm sure the other kids were nice to him, that's one of her big concerns. That he's going to sit in the corner and get bullied.

They usually put the jk with the sk so that the older kids help the younger kids.

Way to go @dadview! I love, love seeing this. My friends are always asking me things like "how do your kids read so well?" And my answer is exactly what you are doing. Read to your kids. I have been reading to my kids nightly since my oldest was born so 9 years! My kids also go to a french school! They read in french too. I think this very valuable! Amazing qualities you are teaching!
It is funny, you just have to do things that make their brain work with out them knowing it.
We also play a lot of board games and puzzles. Lego is also great.
Check out my old post Chess in the streets. He isn't a great chess player but he was able to pick up how all the players move and now thinks before he move to see if I can capture one of his guys. He actually was able to teach my mom how to play.
Getting a child interested in reading at a young age is a great thing and its so good to see Luke so Interested in reading
