Chess in the streets

On our trip to Boston there was a chess table in the lobby of our hotel. Every day my son would ask if we could play. Most days the table was taken and he would ask if we could watch. He would wait patiently for a turn but we would end up going to our room before getting a chance to play.
I told him we should try in the morning and on a few morning's we were able to get the table and play. Luke had never played chess before but is a pretty decent checkers player (for a 5 year old). We played a few games where I was mainly teaching him how each player moved.

It was shocking to me how fast he learned. We ended up having a lot of fun sitting and playing over the next few days. It was great father son time mostly in the morning while mom was still up in the room sleeping.
It became one of my favorite memories of the trip.

On our last day in Boston we went downtown to Quincy Market. This is one of the must go places on anyone's trip. We had some lunch and walked the shops. Sure enough we came across a section of tables in the market that were set up for chess. It looked like a scene from a movie. Old men looking serious, playing high stakes games of chess. Onlookers watching with deep interest. Luke was in awe and obviously asked again if we could play. All the tables were taken and it felt like some sort of chess club. We walked around a bit and noticed a few tables free up. We sat down and played. Three games went by. Great memories were made.
