The Power of Subconscious. [Do you still think you make decisions on your own?]

in #psychology8 years ago (edited)

This true story happened many years ago in Russia. At first glance, it is not anything valuable. However, as you will see, it reveals the greatest mystery of the human psyche. Because the subconscious greatly affects our lives. Even more than any of us thinks.

In the hall there were about 300 people. Before the lights there was a 40-50-year-old person in an expensive suit who looked very quiet and sure. It was a hypnotist. He greeted the public that came to be surprised at his abilities.

And the show has begun.

At a certain point the hypnotist asked a volunteer to go on stage for the next trick. The young man of 30 with a wide smile upon his face, encouraged by his friends, easily took to the stage.

In a few minutes the hypnotist dipped the volunteer into trance, demonstrating to the audience clear signs of lack of consciousness. And then the hypnotist gave him a statement. “Now, after I dehypnotize you, we will sit down and speak at this table. Every time when I tidy my hairdress, you will take off your jacket. And every time when I put my tie straight, you will put on your jacket. On the count of 3 you will wake up.”

The tie and the hairdress.

The young man woke up and being a little confused sat down at a small wooden table that was on the stage. The audience silently followed the events. An easy conversation began. Approximately in a minute the hypnotist tidied his hairdress. The young man immediately stood up, took off his jacket and hung it at the chairback. The hall was filled with applause of the gathered audience.

In a minute the hypnotist put his tie straight. The volunteer got off the chair immediately, put on his jacket and continued their conversation. The audience again applauded.

Thereafter it was several times, and every time when the hypnotist tidied his hairdress, the young man took off his jacket, and when the hypnotist put his tie straight, the young man put on his jacket. The audience was delighted.

Why did they applauded?

However, the most interesting thing was farther. The young man addressed to the hypnotist with an inquiring look: “And what have actually you done? Why did they applauded?”

The hypnotist explained to him that during the hypnotic sleep, he gave him a specific statement, thus in response to certain gestures, he took off and put on the jacket.

“But I knew nothing about these statements”, answered the young man. “Well, tell me, please, what have you been guided by taking off and putting on your jacket? What were your reasons why you did it?”

- Well, at a certain point I decided that I would feel more surely onstage if I take off this jacket.

- OK, but why you decided to put on your jacket again?

- Because I felt cold at a certain point.

- And why did you take it off after?

- Because I was stuffy.

Every time in one way or another the young man explained to himself the reason why he took off and put on his jacket.

But he didn’t know the true reason.

The true reason was that during a hypnotic sleep the hypnotist programmed the man’s subconsciousness to take certain actions. And that was the trick.

The most amazing thing was that the young man precisely carried out everything without knowing anything about the statement that had been given to his subconsciousness.

Subconsciousness strength and consciousness limitation.

This story illustrates features of subconsciousness operation and how a person acts relying upon subconscious impulses. Simultaneously at the level of consciousness every time he explains to himself why he does it. Such is the power of subconsciousness and the consciousness limitation.

The way we explain to ourselves our actions is not always true. In many cases true reasons of our behavior is hidden in these subconscious statements which were put, for example, in our childhood.

When subconsciousness is open for programming.

Subconsciousness doesn’t know what is good and what is bad. It just carries out all our statements like a computer. When we repeatedly say a certain phrase, it becomes a keynote for our subconsciousness. Or when we say a certain phrase at the moment of emotional stress. Subconsciousness is open for programming during eating, dreaming, having sex, contacting with money, having frank, hearty talks, listening to music, dancing or singing.

Therefore it is very important to be attentive to what we say, what we hear, what we see at these moments. The great power of destiny is hidden in our subconsciousness. It can either give you a boost to the top or kick you down.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! ;)
Be attentive. Speak consciously.

Great post @omfedor, upvote for you. You really explained this well with good examples. That being said, as a hypnotist with 500 hours of training,
I would like to clarify some points. We all go into a state of hypnosis many times a day; Switching between the conscious and the subconscious at intervals unique to each person.

When we repeatedly say a certain phrase, it becomes a keynote for our subconsciousness.

Saying a repeated phrase does not necessarily reach the subconscious; Especially if you have a pre-existing belief in your subconscious that is opposite to the repeated phrase or if there is no feeling/emotion behind what is being said. Like I said before we are constantly switching between the two state seamlessly. That being said, it is true though that saying a repeated phrase (Mantra/TM/etc.) is one of many methods to reach a trance state to better access ones subconscious to program/reprogram it.

Or when we say a certain phrase at the moment of emotional stress. Subconsciousness is open for programming during eating, dreaming, having sex, contacting with money, having frank, hearty talks, listening to music, dancing or singing.

Any strong emotional moment can access the subconscious mind to program it. Emotional stress is just one of the many emotions that have direct access to the subconscious. Also the examples you listed are good but should be mentioned that they do not apply to everyone. For example, certain people will not get an emotional activation from singing or dancing.

One last point I would like to add, despite popular belief, a person can not be made to do anything in hypnosis that goes against there core beliefs while they are in hypnosis. If a person is requested to do anything they normally wouldn't do they will either A) come out of the trance state immediately or B) not respond and will wait for the next suggestion.

If anyone has anymore questions about hypnosis feel free to ask, Cheers

That's true :) However, such singing and such dancing I do not consider as singing and dancing :) But of course, emotion is the key to the subconscious.

Thank you for your valuable comment, @ballinconscious!
Looking forward to your posts on this topic!

Thanks you for your encouragement. I will indeed start writing my first articles on this topic and others very soon. this seems like a very constructive place for sharing, learning and debating new ideas.

If I am not aware of it then it does not exist. So as long as I stay fit and healthy such ideas like a subconscious are useless to me. They are only relevant to persons who need to become more balanced. But thinking and talking about such ideas doesn't help, people need practical things to change their state of being.

If I am not aware of it then it does not exist.

Cannot agree with your logic, @onesunbeingnow - you don't know a lot. But it's there.

"If I am not aware of it then it does not exist." is simple and true, as everything that is going on around me right now is real and anything that is not going on now is not, is false.

What is there to know? Nothing. Information is false, ultimately. Sure it can serve me. I can get lost, dig deep, become involved in the paths that information lead me down. But its all to get enough mental power to change my light around me to the experience I wish too see. But information is not a real thing. There is no such things as intelligence. I am as intelligent as a rock, as are all beings. Thinking I am superior in anyway is egoistic. I would rather be natural, and simply free. If I feel I have 'understood' something, all I have really done is 'stand under' (under-stand) informational belief and been as slave too it. But as soon as those ideas are no longer in my mind then I am free. So my statements are easily seen as true.

OK, I've heard you ;)

Im not sure what is the context all of this is applying to. It sounds like you are talking about carl jungs nature vs consciousness. He is pretty amazing and has very Interesting ideas indeed.

The context is now. Whatever is going on now is true, is real, it needs no proof with words. Whereas whatever is not going on right now is not, is false, untrue, not real, needs words to explain it. However, if I want to change the light around me to reflect what I want to see then I may put a lot of energy into words so that happens, so I experience something I am thinking about. Science, religion, any belief system is like this.

If I am not aware of it then it does not exist.

I agree with this from the existential perspective of any individual, this is true. but It does not mean that it isn't still working in the background. Just as a coding on a computer still continues to run in the background whatever way it was programmed, despite my lack knowledge of how to change/rewrite it or were its location even exist on the machine.

They are only relevant to persons who need to become more balanced. But thinking and talking about such ideas doesn't help, people need practical things to change their state of being.

I have to respectfully disagree with this. The subconscious and hypnosis are not just for people who need to become more balance, even though it is often used as a last resort when a person is really imbalanced because of the negative association that people connect hypnosis with; Just like @davidbrogan said so well with his positive healing experience.

ill use computer as an analogy again. It is true that a computer programmer can eliminate a virus using coding knowledge (becoming more balance) but he can do many other things with that knowledge. Creating practically any type of game, software, or even a program to run in the background.

That's very interesting... There are a lot of people preaching the law of attraction, to force yourself to think positively, and see if this forced thought will change your life. But you have just proven that thoughts are NOT the source of power, they are the result of power. There is certainly some interesting things going on with the mind. Thanks for sharing.

Well, as I see this process, thought and emotion are like yin and yang. One begets the other. The thought is the masculine energy. And the emotion is feminine. So they're working together.

Thank you for your thoughts, @damono!

Quite a few similarities with my recently published article. Dying to see more of this on Steemit! Thanks for writing this

Thanks for your comment, @kevinwong!

Would you please give a link to your article? Interested to read it.

It's spread out across 2 posts (take a look around the 5 most recent posts :) @kevinwong)

I'll check it! Thank you! ;)

I have personal experience of this. Smoked for 25 years. Tried everything to quit. As a last resort I tried hypnosis. Fear of potentially what the hypnotist could 'plant' in my mind had held me back from trying it previously, but I was pretty desperate at this stage. One session did the trick. I have never smoked since. Used to be 30+ a day guy.

Thanks for sharing your positive experience and fears that you had before you actually experienced it. @davidbrogan

WOW! An impressive story, @davidbrogan!
Definitely the subconscious mind has the great power. It's a big fortune, if there "planted" good things and disaster, if bad.

Yes! Most are unaware how often the subconscious is driving the show. Great post. Upvoted. 👍🏽

Thanks, @steemed-open! It's a pleasure! :)

very interesting and unusual topic. good work. this is a true steemit article.

Absolutely wonderful article @omfedor . I've personally been actively programming my own subconscious for the past several years. I like to throw on an educational video of sorts while I'm playing a game. Or listen to music while reading. I've learned that the dual-emotional triggers and engaging both hemispheres of the brain (I know that's over-simplified) has a much greater success rate of being embedded in my mind, than if I were to do one of the tasks by itself.

I certainly appreciate the defined situations for increased influence. It seems that the more primal based an action is, the more open the subconscious is to influence.

Thank you for your interesting comment, @shneakysquirrel!

It seems that the more primal based an action is, the more open the subconscious is to influence.

Agree, subconscious is our "animal part". This is what connects us with the world of matter, with Nature.

Thats awesome that you've figured out your best way to work with your mind @shneakysquirrel.
Although I would call this more of left brain/right brain (bases on which side is more dominant) learning style rather than programming or reprogramming the subconscious. I will use computers as a comparison/example for the mind. Its like the difference between coding a computer(subconscious programming) and figuring out which software works best for you personally for whatever your trying to accomplish (learning style). For programming and reprogramming the subconscious mind, it actually works best just to focus on one thing.

It seems that the more primal based an action is, the more open the subconscious is to influence.

While our subconscious can be called our "animal part", I feel that defining it this way limits the aspects of the full potential of what it really is. while our subconscious mind does connect to the "animal part"/reptilian brain it, I would say that is just one of many parts that our subconscious mind connect too. I would say a closer example (still limited though) would be calling it our child part. Mostly because of the lack of a conscious logical filter and the strong emotional connection children have to experiences.

Oh! You write intimate knowledge about the workings of the human psyche. And it's always interesting :}

That's for sure! It helps to better understand yourself.
