Imagine Removing the 'Ego', What is Left?

in #psychology6 years ago (edited)

I refer to the ego as part of a complex called the ego-personality-identity construct. This is the self, the 'I'. That is what 'ego' means anyways, from the Latin ego which means 'I', the self.

If you could remove the ego construct, the personality and identity factor from the human being, what are you left with? You are left with the psyche, consciousness alone. This is the underlying common aspect all humans share. The bare no-self foundation of a human being.

Could you do anything being like this? I think not.

In order to differentiate one things from another, each has an identity (law of identity). If you don't even have an identity for yourself, you can't distinguish yourself from anything else.

But back to consciousness as the metaphysical common base of the biological human physical construct. Despite all the differences each person has at an individual level, as an ego-personality-identity construct, we are all a unit of consciousness, blank and ready to be filled through our existence in existence. This is why we have what is call ego and identity.

We can know how everyone functions in common. This is psychology, the study of the psyche. We can know ourselves in this individuated consciousness experience, by this aspect of the psyche, as it is the common factor of the human being construct.

Self-knowledge has two main aspects: what we all have in common as a general universal of consciousness functionality, and the specific individual ego-personality-identity that is unique to each of us.

Learn about your ego, personality and its individual expression, but don't use the differences with others as a way to stay separate and disconnected. People are so divided by their personality differences, their race, social class, etc., but they fail to recognize that we are all the same underneath at the level of consciousness.

We all share the same physical, psychological and emotional framework at a base level, despite having different physical, psychological and emotional constructs and expressions. Self-knowledge helps us better perceive, understand and navigate our own lives and our interactions with others.

That doesn't mean there aren't reasons to separate and divide from others, such as moral principles being violated. True unity is based in morality. People who fail to live at the moral level of others won't be able to truly unite. E.g. a murder won't be uniting with a non-murderer, a thief won't be uniting with non-thieves. Morality misalignment is a valid reason for division.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

@krnel widely used in studies related to psychoanalysis and philosophy. According to psychoanalytic theory, the ego is part of the triad of the psychic model, formed by the ego, the superego and the ID.

The ego is considered as the "defender of the personality", since it is responsible for the prevention of the unconscious contents pass in the field of consciousness, thus triggering its defense mechanisms.
One of the main functions of the self is to harmonize the identification desires with the reality of the superego. So the ego suppresses the ID of unconscious desires to "fear" of punishments.
The ego is responsible for the differentiation that the individual is capable of performing, between their own internal processes and the reality that is presented to them.

It's an interesting model indeed.

Living in harmony is important, but only if we know our personality and our inner self can we achieve it. Sometimes we think that we are very different, and of course we are, everyone has their way of being and thinking, but differences should not distance us, on the contrary, it should be a point in favor to work for the good of all.

Indeed. Different but similar.

So ego is like our unique identity?I am in agree with you.Because it's makes us different from others. But being egoistic is not good for anyone. You have to use our ego to make you a better person. You have to be careful that to maintain your ego your moral never gets down. Thanks for the post.

Yes, being egoistic is a negative expression of the ego, but it's not what an ego is at the base ;)

Thank's for your reply. Now i am clear about ego.

And in a world with such an ambiguous morality, nothing could be achieved in particular while people are not aware that a change is needed from all areas

Yes, change towards morality in common unity, and humanity will progress like it never has before :)

I'm reminded of The Matrix right now.

Neo talks to the Oracle where she references the "Know thyself" plaque on the wall.

Know thyself is an important question to dig into in life. Self-knowledge is required for humanity to progress and change for the better.

Like always it's a matter of definition. Also Consciousness...at last is an entity. So to me that is human consciousness you write about... Good definition though...made some thoughts on this here: https://steemit.com/philosophy/@thomasheindl/empathy-consciousness-interaction

posts that attract my friends. I agree with you. looking at your post, I'm the lightest psychoanalytic sigmund freud about id, ego, and super ego. It is a component of the human personality as a being. bravo ...

I agree with you, the article is very interesting,
