A Walkthrough Of Some Of Our Australian Prepping Supplies: A Discussion About The Advantages Of A Deep Pantry And A Look At Our Food, Water, Sanitation & Fuel Supplies.steemCreated with Sketch.

in #prepping8 years ago

Greetings fellow preppers! We're working on unpacking after moving home and having unstacked some of our supplies, the thought occurred that a video would be a good idea.

We've been collecting and storing some basic supplies for quite a while and wanted to share some of our basic utilities, food, water, petrol and personal hygiene selections.

Much of this stuff we stored in tubs when living in a tiny 3 bedroom unit so it's managable for households with the smallest of footprints. Now being on 10 acres we can spread out a bit and expand our supplies.

I've already done a short video of our humble food producing garden which may help some people starting out.

We're by no means big time off-grid homesteaders but are probably more prepared than most for extended disruptions or inconveniences.

Constructive comments, suggestions and discussions very welcome. I'd be particularly appreciative if the heavy-weights like @mericanhomestead would weigh in. Enjoy and feel free to follow & resteem.

Unfortunately I cant watch the video (Im on 2gb of data a week) but I noticed the tuna tins. I used to stock tuna too but not since fukushima and we only eat fresh water fish these days. Pasta, rice, beans, lentils, diced tomato tins, tapioca, sugar... is what I stock up on.

Ultimately we wanna go off grid, with organic veg and aquaponic system. Thats my big Big dream.

Agree with you @bearone. In fact I used to eat a lot of tinned tuna and ended up being diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity a while back so I back off now and try for quality salmon.

I try to weigh up those considerations with needing a range of dietary components when food may be scarce. If it came down to running out of food I'd be very thankful for the tinned fish I think... but yeah a home aquaponic setup would be ideal! Thanks for your input.

;) dont forget your veggie patch either.
Id like to have the aquaponics set up in a greenhouse and then have another set of veggies growing outside.

You may be interested in the link I put in this post that takes you to the little vege garden walkaround I did recently. It's a small setup but it's a start and has been educational for us.

It's a good feeling to be eating something you've grown yourself.

Would be keen to hear your comments on that too 😆

Everything is contaminated nowadays because big business only care about profits, the human factor is not a consideration. Such a shame

Hi @yvonnebraaf. Indeed, it is a shame. To a large extent we are stuck in a system that is not good for us. Best we can do is little by little remove our dependency and strive for independence as much as possible in as many areas as we can achieve.

Great initiative, we all need to be responsible citizens of the earth.

Interesting to have an emergency store, and it is well organized too.
Looks pretty complete to me.

Is that like a ham radio? and how can you learn how to use one?

Thanks for the comment @bchick. Yes we find havings everything out on shelving makes it easier to rotate stock and also easier to find things. When in tubs, you easily forget what you've got and which tub it's in... so order is a good objective.

Sorry I'm not sure what you're referring to with the ham radio. There isn't a radio in this setup... that I'm aware of!

Oh I thought I heard something about a radio. Others would have to have one too if you were going to invest in one.

The setup is also in your face as a reminder to always be ready.

I'll have to listen to the video again! I dont recall mentioning a radio. I did talk briefly about the signalling mirror as a crude form of communication... perhaps that comment got you thinking of radios 😊

Agree that you'd need the other party willing and able to participate in radio comms for that to work.

No doubt you are right about what I heard and how I interpreted it.

When we first read Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse we were interested in ham radios and we got ham radio kits for our grandchildren, since it was our son who pointed out the book to us. But that was a community of people and they needed them to communicate with each other.

So how, or why, would you use the signaling mirrors?

Certainly, when prearranged, radios can be useful but for these purposes, those hand held two-way walkie talkies would be best. Grab 2 units, slect a channel and away you go. Useful when just moving around acreage too without using a mobile phone.

A signalling mirror can alert others of your position by reflecting the sun onto them. The mirror has holes that you look through and you hold your thumb up in front of it to line the sunlight up between you and the observer. The natural movement of your hand will make the reflection flicker and draw attention.

Because it's fairly targeted you can avoid other observers from seeing your reflection but that's more a strategic consideration. A simple and effective way for example to attract the attention of a rescue chopper during daylight conditions where no other communication is available.

Thanks. Interesting was to learn how to communicate in certain conditions.

Just what a community like this is good for. Thanks for your comments and contributions. Much appreciated.

Nice one amigo...
That is very helpfull. I hope you are ok if I add a few.
•We collect seed as they as well
• non perishables we stock right up on like toilet paper and dishwashing liquid.
• buy 20 litre food storage containers with screw lids for rice, salt, powdered milk and dried beans....which you can get all in bulk.
• Honey is another luxury item you can buy in bulk and can store indefinately.
Also I would recommend a generator, having lived through a few cyclones I can tell you that if you can cool drink and produce ice you are going to be very popular.

Great info mate, these are the kinds of discussions that make us all more resilient.

Seeds are a great idea. We keep some too including corn kernels which we've had success growing. Sprouting too. We've got a little tiered plastic sprouting rack that you can water and that'll produce tasty and nutritious sprouts in about 2 - 3 days. The seeds are consumed however doing this obviously.

Tubs sound good for protection from the elements. One thing I forgot to say in the video is to keep the water stored away from light... even wrapped in black garbage bags. Helps to prevent organisms growing. Again the purification methods like the life straw and tabs can help there too.

Honey. Yes! Hadn't thought of that.

The generator issue is interesting. We had considered buying one years ago and almost did but opted instead to go with a solar inverter for a few reasons. Firstly it is completely renewable which has been useful when we have had Neighbours run out of petrol for their generators during extended power outages. Secondly it is totally silent and can be run indoors indefinitely. We have found that when you are the only one to have power it might be something not to advertise to broadly. Of course it wouldn't hurt to have a generator in addition. It's one of those tricky ones where you would like to help people but by the same token you don't want to put yourself at risk if that makes any sense. At some stage I'll do a video on the solar inverter we have so you can get an idea of how we use it

Nothing wrong with that! People can say what they want but you my friend realize what's coming and definitely are preparing

Thank you @buster544. This small setup is only one dimension of being prepared. One of the reasons for us getting a second horse for example is so that we both have an alternative source of off-road transport that runs on grass!

I'm looking to do a video on our "mobile home" which will allow us to quickly relocate. You may be interested in keeping an eye out for that one...

Will keep up and watch any upcoming videos, stay safe and keep doing what your doing.

Thanks kindly. Knowing there's interest out there is motivating in terms of producing more content.

I love those hotdogs in a can! my wife thtows them out on me though as she says they are poison !!

Ha! Possibly so. They're somewhat long life however which is the big requirement for a deep pantry. Nutrition is good if you can also tick that box. Tradable too... sounds like you're ready to do a deal!

I assume that you cycle through your stocks so that nothing you have is way out of date?

Ideally, but it doesn't always work that way in practice. Now that it's all out and on shelving rather than stored on tubs we've got a much better chance of achieving that.

That has always been one issue to contend with when stocking up.

What about a solar stove?

I've seen those and have been impressed. I like avoiding smoke. I've also looked at the steel camping cookers. Ruggeded and reliable and can be fueled with collected sticks and branches. Something like the EcoZoom Rocket Stove or a bigger one that I think was covered by City Preppers on YouTube perhaps but I've not done much research yet. A big rugged unit could partly replace the electric cooktop in the kitchen for power savings.

We've been thinking of getting one. I hope to hear what you decide to do about it.

Will keep you informed for sure. Your interest has motivated me to get something happening there sooner rather than later 👍

Good for you! Upvoted and followed!

Wonderful! Thanks for commenting @carryOn.

I'm a prepper, you're a prepper, wouldn't you like to be a prepper to? Good article. Upvoted and following now

Thanks fot the praise @bluerthangreen, glad you enjoyed it.
