Dreaming of Cherry Blossoms: Pink is the colour of unconditional love to "ourselves" and "others"
Sakura Blossoms
Sakura (桜 (kanji), 櫻 (old kanji), さくら (hiragana), サクラ (katakana)) is the Japanese term for ornamental flowering cherry blossom trees that belong to the genus Prunus. Cherry blossoms are along with Chrysanthemum the national flower of Japan. The image of Japan in Spring is invariably linked to white and pink flowers. Still these trees are now widespread in other countries and I'm blessed to have many of them in my neighbourhood as my town has a sisterhood with a Japanese town.
Just a few weeks ago it was "raining petals" again.
The breeze was sweeping them and they would swirl all around...
Don't you believe in magic? I do
They usually bloom mid April though the flowers only last for a couple of weeks. Its beauty is fleeting but also a symbol of renewal. Present in countless poems and folklore tails, it blooms in full splendor then falls with the wind soon after. It represents the transient nature of life itself. The leaves are born copper brown and turn green in Summer.
Blossom festivals: The tradition of Hanami and Yozakura
In Japan, during this season people celebrate the ancient tradition of Hanami literally means “watching blossoms,” and friends and family gather, bond and celebrate, even parties to meet new friends. The custom may have started during the Nara period (710–794). It was originally a way to worship the goods Nature provided. People believed in spirits (kami) that would inhabit the trees and made offerings and partook with sake.
During the night Hanami shifts name into Yozakura (that means cherry blossom at night). In China they have also "blossom festivals". I was born in La Palma, the Canary Islands, and there we have a similar tradition around the blooming of almond trees.
In fields, mountains and villages
As far as the eye can see.
Is it mist, or clouds?
Fragrant in the morning sun.
Cherry blossoms, cherry blossoms,
Flowers in full bloom.
Are there blossom festivals where you live? Share in the comments
Cherry blossom trees belong to the genus Prunus
The most popular variety of cherry blossom Prunus yedonensis has white flowers with a light pink tint. Very delicate, but the ones around my neighbourhood that belongs to the variety Prunus serrulata "Kanzan" that actually comes from China and that blooms in clusters of double pink blossom, each one with 20-30 petals. It is sterile and gives no fruits. Vigorous, upright they are sturdy trees that prefer sunny spots. And are likely the more widespread in cities all over the world because of its spectacular blooming and later on lush shady canopy in Summer.
The town I live in, Pamplona (North of Spain) has a sisterhood with Yamaguchi (Japan) so we are blessed with many Cherry Tree Blossoms around April and early May.
Preparing the photoshoot. Never pick a flower from the tree, it brings bad luck!!
Japanese tradition say you should never pick a petal, blossom or branch from a cherry tree, it brings bad luck... probably this was meant to prevent people from taking the flowers from the trees. Well, I did not... I collected all the blossoms one windy morning when it had rained petals and even full flowers. It was so easy to collect, the whole streets were paved with them. So none were taken from the trees where they remained until the time to fall down. I connected an entire box full of petals.
Final result and the meaning of the color pink: Unconditional love, tenderness
I tried to convey tenderness, sweetness and innocence... fragility too, things often related with this this colour. Pink is often related to our "inner child". Overall I liked the result, I think it looks very vulnerable but also "starry eyed and full of hope".
Pd: I made the crown myself, I wish I had realized to change the paper roses for cherry blossoms... but overall it was at hand and it fitted with the colours and mood.
I'll admit it... I'm not very fond of the colour pink... I almost never wear it... And I guess that is because I happen to have very blonde hair and blue eyes, If I wear pink I suffer the the cliché and or stigma of Barbie Doll... So it's been a colour I avoid to wear. I never played with dolls really...
But in all fair honesty It is indeed a very feminine colour yet still much more than that.
I have to say I have made amends with pink thanks to Spring blossoms... and I started to "feel" the pure energy of this color too. I love pink in Spring when it explodes all around me.
The colour related with caring and understanding...
It combines the passion of the "red" and the purity of the "white" combined.
It is also considered the universal colour of love to ourselves and others. Also associated to the idea of "unconditional love"
It's related hope, with empathy and also with our childhood.
I am myself a grown child, and still very naive in many ways
It is related with health. We say "rosy cheeks"

During Spring and because it's time to bloom and renew, I am doing a special series of articles and photo shoots about flowers. I like the metaphorical idea of "blooming" during this season... and I'm undergoing a time where I have been nurturing the seeds of my dreams so they can grow, and hopefully bloom.

I love cherry blossoms. And there's so many pink flowers in bloom where I live right now. I just wanted to say your costume wardrobe is amazing. I don't know where I'd keep all those gowns. I'm a big fan of flower power photos. I just can't help but be enthralled by nature in a pure form. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
I barely rarely buy anything, most are gifts, or endorsements, I also upcycle and customize a lot. I am a good thrifter. A mazi dress attach some maxi floating sleeves and you are done. Here the crown I made it myself.
That's lovely. A dream like wardrobe. I own one cloak and it's not for pictures. Lol. The crown is gorgeous. I once attempted a daisy chain and it looked like a birds nest haha. You're very talented.
I have about 4 cherry blossoms in my yard. 2 with burgundy flowers and 2 with pink flowers. My burgundy ones are dying but still having new growth. I do not know how to save the trees or heal them, so I took a couple of new growths in all respect to the tree and said to it that I will grow it again. I will make a new line of cherry blossom trees in it's honor.
The pink trees we have seem to be healthy. They are a different kind I suppose as they do not blossom the same as in your pictures. Yours are full and fluffy. Mine are smaller and not so thick.
I find it so interesting that there are many varieties of the same plant. It is fascinating.
I love your pictures and the last one is a picture of a thousand words. Beautiful, stunning, soft, tranquil, innocent... It matches with you perfectly and just makes it all so radiant. Bathe in flowers!
I blush a little when people point out I'm just wearing petals, but I found it sweet and empowering, precisely in an innocent way. Those are beautiful, I wish I had a garden, and cherry blossoms in it, hope your trees recover.
So beautiful, Priscilla! I'm also absolutely enamored with cherry blossoms!
Especially when it rains pink petals. It truly is magical. And you, adorned in petals, is the ultimate picture of delicious alchemy. <3
Awww I'm always expecting your comments because they come along such beautiful pictures :) aww so ethereal...
oh blush, thanks, It was really fun to collect the petals.
Ohhhh my goodness, Priscilla! I luuuuuuv flowering cherry trees! I've never heard them called by the Japanese name. Your photo shoots are always so dreamy and beautiful, just like you. If @hedac is taking the pictures of you, he is to be complimented in the highest levels of admiration!
Lovely lovely post as always! Thank you for delighting us all once again! I know it won't be the last !💚
We certainly have fun. He knows how to see me, I made the crown myself and went foraying flowers from the floor loo. I needed two boxes for that pic alone. And pink is not my colour but green but I love its meaning. We have lots of cherry blossoms cos Pamplona has a sisterhood with Yamaguchi thus Yamaguchi is the name of the central park.
It is just never ending magic what you are creating. I am so glad you express who you are and all your talents.
Thank you so much... I love expressing through fantasy, dreams and Nature in all its ways. It is what spices my existence and I am glad some people like you can appreciate it. Magic is all around me, I am just a vessel and a channel... We all are if we allow ourselves to come through 💓💓💓
You express beautifully. :)
Thank you, you're very sweet. Brightest blessings on your way.
I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this post! I love the story of these cherry blossoms. Great tradition, and your photos are absolutely GORGEOUS!!!
And now all is gone until next year
It is a beautiful sight when it rains flowers. Thank you 💓❤️💓
Love these blossoms So pretty! Almost as pretty as you ;) Upvoted :)
What a wonderful post.
I lived in Osaka Japan for 3 1/2 years and the cherry blossom festivals are amazing. I was so surprised that the calendar would have a week already determined to be the Cherry Blossom festival week and a couple of days before the Festival started all the trees would explode in pink, and then the week long festival would be filled with blossoms. Then at the end of the festival it was like the trees themselves knew it was over and all the blossoms would be gone in a couple of days.
Awww would love to see... Yes it is short and sweet as they say. We have a japanese design park called Yamaguchi to honour a japanese town. I love when it rain petals.
