Dewy Morning exploring Ancient Woodlands in Scotland

in #photography6 years ago

Morning Steemians!

Autumn really does feel like it has arrived here in the UK, mornings are colder and crisp and the light looks different. I am so excited to start seeing the leaves change and go out and explore our new neighborhoods new colours. Even though the colours aren't quite turned yet getting out and exploring the new surroundings is definitely worth it. We took a quick trip up to Scotland to visit family and go for a beautiful walk in an ancient woodland. The morning was all dewy and fresh and the sights we saw were just amazing! I hope you all enjoy the post!

We started the walk in the ancient woodland (Ballachuan Hazlewood) which has been in existence since the last Ice Age! Its a very precious habitat with hundreds of different species of lichen, moss and other amazing things. What I didn't expect to see was the hundreds of thousands of spider webs!!! Knowing how ancient this land was it was almost quite surreal to see all these amazing webs!

The light was catching them so beautifully, lighting up all the little dew drops on the little webs. It was so pretty, they looked so delicate like little bits of lace! It was really hard not to step on any or walk through this amazing field, but we tried our best! Also I wasn't too happy of the thought of them all crawling around on us!

There were some lovely pop of colour among all the bracken and others plants. I loved this little bit of purple creeping in from the background adding a nice bit of colour to the otherwise muted frame.

In this shot below you can clearly see how many spider webs there were! It was just crazy, I don't think I have ever seen so many all in one place. I wonder how they all work out who is going to go where or if any of them fight for the best spot! There must definitely be a good supply of food and bugs for them if they are all congregating here! It was amazing how much water dew was on all these cobwebs which really showed how many there were, without all the droplets I don't think you could be able to see the scale of it at all!

The spider webs weren't just on the bracken either they were on all the amazing low lying tree branches too. It was amazing, it was like this was the forest of spiders! Which is probably a lot of peoples worst nightmare!! It was actually quite hard to pick out the spiders, which I was quite glad about tbh! But I wanted to try and get a few shots of the spiders to prove that they were there and it wasn't just the webs left behind!

Here we go!! This one was quite big actually and although I am not terrified of spiders I also am not that keen on them! So seeing them this close was also quite scary for me! They looked so peaceful though, and seeing all of them in this scale really did create some kind of otherwordly atmosphere. It was like being in a movie scene or something! Maybe not the scene out of Harry Potter but it definitely could have been somewhere like this that gave people the ideas for it!

It was so nice to see lots of different flowers out too, ones that aren't open in the Summer. Its not always in Summer that the prettiest flowers come out, sometimes at this time of year you get amazing little flowers emerging, its always so interesting to go out and photograph the same areas at different times of year and see how nature changes.

This was the beautiful sty that you had to hop over into the fields and into the woodlands which was really nice. It was as maintained as possible without being too man made.

This view with the ancient Hazel Tree's down through the valley was just stunning. The blue skies were poking through the branches and I always wonder what trees this old have seen, the stories they have heard and the scenes that unraveled next to them. I mean these trees have been here since the last ice age, that's a LONG time, I would really love to know what they have seen. The have endured a lot of harsh weather but the feeling of being near them was positive and lifting energy.

Lots of different fungi has started growing on the trees, with all the moss and lichen you could definitely create little world's within these shots! I always have loved looking at fungi I had no idea how many different types there were and some of them can be quite rare. Its amazing, they are like little alien life forms living on these ancient branches very happily.

verity-24.jpg

Even this amazing old sign directing you to the old woods had been coated in a lovely bit of lichen and moss, how beautiful! I love things like this, it is really aged naturally, how it should be and looks so pretty set into the countryside.

Some Hazel's have started to come out on the trees and deep into the forest it was so nice to get this dappled, soft light and being able to photograph these amazing things in a nice area.

Look at this amazing mushroom, the colours don't even look real do they! It was amazing! It was like something you would find on a nature programme on TV. They looked so happy in this shaded part of the forest and everywhere you looked it was like discovering a new little habitat for other animals and plants.

Then we spotted this... a little Wren. The smallest bird in the UK. It was so sweet and didn't mind us getting a few shots of it as it realxed in the hedge! The light was just right to get some little photographs of it too!

One final stop before heading home, to the Atlantic Bridge. Some of you may remember me visiting here earlier in the year, it certainly looked different then! It was so great to see the blue skies and clear waters again and this amazing bridge never disappointed. Its always so easy to get beautiful shots of this place, it does all the work for you! The reflections were just amazing and it was so peaceful to see the water so still. Its an odd thought to think that this is a bridge across the Atlantic sea, but that's exactly what it is, even though its small and you wouldn't really imagine that a bridge across the Atlantic would exists, it really is so special.

The water was so clear you could see all the sea weed moving slowly with the waves, it was such an amazing view! Also hard to get it all in one frame!

And then we spotted a little tiny frog how cute!!

I hope you all have enjoyed this little day out with me in nature. These days are my favourite and I can't wait to have more of them in Autumn very soon!

Thank you for stopping by! - Verity x
