HUMANS OF ITALY - The meaning of "Home"

Antonietta is a 30 years old woman. She is a new mum. She's been a mum for almost a year now.
She and her baby were born on the same day, just in time for Christmas.

Big party, this year. The beautiful baby will be 1 year soon. She's so cute and tender. She's all her world. Meaning, she's the one who really takes all her time, all day long.
It's a bond you cannot reject. You don't want to do it, you couldn't imagine your life without this baby girl now, but in the meantime you're destroyed.

"Women who says that maternity is wonderful and stressless and an amazing experience, they're lying. Because it's wonderful, it's completing but it is unimaginably tiring and stressing. You don't sleep. You forgot what it means. I'm tired."

She lives in Rome, the eternal city. She comes from Sicily. She was born and grew up in a small town by the sea. She misses it. She misses the ocean breeze, the view of the sea, the smell that filled the air.

She misses home.

Home. Home is a strange philosophical concept.

People feels at home wherever in the world and it is not necessarily linked to a house, a building. Home is the people who inhabit a house. That perfume in the air of the rooms of your childhood.

Home is the streets of the town that saw you growing up. Home is the friend from the other side of the world that you only see once in a while but that is so close anytime.

Home is where your heart belongs; it’s everywhere and nowhere in the same time. Often, home is something you’re missing, something that only exists in your own mind. It’s the feeling of missing something that you know you cannot find in the place you are, but only somewhere else.

Antonietta knows it. She knows that when she’s in her hometown, she misses something. In the same time, when she’s in her new city, 500 km away from there, she misses something too. She thinks that probably she would miss something even if she would still be living in her ideal place. She thinks about her daughter. She would be even more rootless than her. Her parents are both from the same small village by the sea, as where her grandparents and great-grandparents. Her daughter, on the contrary, has multiple roots. One from far away, from Brazil, the home county of her dad on the other side of the world and one from the deepest Italian South. In between, the little baby is growing up in a big town where they have now their job and friends. But, in the future? Are they going to stay there forever?

Antonietta doesn’t know it. She doesn’t know whether she would live this rootless life, or multi roots life, in this town or somewhere else.

She dreams about a calmer life, a small perfect life where peace and love and serenity are the main actors.

She’s trying to figure it out for her baby, for herself and for her dreams.

Would she succeed? I don’t know. I hope she would.
