5 Psychedelic Photos of Lake Tahoe's Casinos (and a bit of how-to)
On Saturday night, I shot some more fun psychedelic photos of some of Lake Tahoe's casinos. It's a wild look that I used to create years ago, but recently while in Las Vegas for the Steem Creators Conference, I tried the old technique again and really had a lot of fun with it. On Saturday, I had shot a nice sunset out at Secret Cove and on my way back home, I was about to pass these casinos at the Nevada/California border when I realized I had never used that technique there. So I quickly turned into one of the parking lots, got out my gear, and played with the lights instead of the slot machines.
I explained this technique in the Las Vegas photos post HERE, but I'll explain again.
This look is created in camera, not in Photoshop. These were all shot on a Canon 5DS R with a 24-105mm lens. This ISO was 400, the apertures were between f9 and f18 depending on how bright the sign was, and the shutter speeds were all 1 second long. During the long exposure, I zoomed the lens and moved the camera a bit. I start out trying to keep the camera as still as possible during the first half of the one-second long exposure. Then I zoomed the lens fast for the second half of the exposure. For some of the shots I started out with the lens set at a wide angle of 24mm, then I zoomed to 105mm. For some of them it was opposite, where I started out at 105mm, then zoomed out wide. I always tried to make sure the main subject matter was in focus when I started the shot. This technique requires a lot of experimenting and taking many many exposures, making slight adjustments each time in order to end up with a "keeper" shot.
Did you know Lake Tahoe has casinos? About half of the lake is in Nevada where gambling is legal, and the other half is in California where it is not legal. These are on the north side of the lake. There are a lot more casinos on the south side of the lake and I plan on shooting those soon...
What do you think of this look? Do you like it or should I stick with Tahoe landscapes? Haha! Cheers!!!
Thank you for looking and reading!

Groovy! I love this look. Bonus: scrolling up and down creates a bit of an optical illustion that there is movement happening, especially with that last one. At least that what happens on my laptop screen.
Woah, that's wild. I just spent way too long scrolling up and down trying to figure out what was going on there, lol. Still not sure why it does that, but it does in on my 27 inch 5k monitor too. Thank you, glad you dig that look!
These photos really brought tears to my eyes. The beauty here is remarkable. This stuff really soothed my mind and soul much like artwork from https://www.instagram.com/phaneros_art/
Maybe I can link you with my friend as this really is along what he does. I dont know maybe prints or something you guys are kind of neighbors...
That's awesome @dynamicgreentk! I hope to shoot the South Lake Tahoe casinos soon so get that tissue box ready haha! Yeah, Nevada City is only about an hour from here. Checked out the art, super cool, and now following on insta. Thank you! Oh, and thank you for the resteem as well!

I didn't know gambling is illegal in California...
Nice photos btw.. ;)
Greets from Bulgaria!
Thank you! And hello to you in Bulgaria!
Well, there are some legal casinos in California but they are on "Indian reservations", areas owned by Native Americans and the laws are very different there.
I love these wavy lines man ~
they are really cool and trippy lol👍
I really love your landscapes @scottshots!
But it's nice to mix it up sometimes eh!? :-)
Yes, it is fun to mix it up indeed! Glad you like these and the landscapes both, thank you!
it is just a lot of fun. will not win any awards but it will make you smile :D when i am trying something like this, it is just like when a child is playing :) i just lack a bigger zoom lens.
Hey, I've sold a few prints of this look (shot in Reno, Nevada) back in the day. And that's my favorite kind of reward, haha! It is fun to "play" with this look indeed. A loose, free feel where you get to break photography "rules". Might be time to cash out some STEEM and get a bigger zoom lens! Cheers @bil.prag!
my curse is that my photography beginnings were almost all in low light and no flash so i have a problem of buying bigger f stops and small f stops don't go well with small $ :D i will probably end up with buying used 70 to 200 f4 as that will be decent. or maybe i would get some whales and steem will go to 30$ and then f2.8 will be mine :D
The good news about smaller f stops is higher ISOs are getting better and better with new cameras. That 70-200 is on my wish list too... STEEM to the moon!!! Then we will all be laughing about our old gear.
I like the psychedelic look! The long exposure with the zoom gives me a feeling of what it would be like stumbling home after a big night out in a neon city haha
Right!? It's definitely a stumbling home kind of look, haha! I know that feeling too well... Cheers!
Awesome shots bro , very fun and smooth light trails... lets see what i come up with when i visit Vegas in the future.
be well
Thank you! It's a super fun technique, have fun in Vegas!
These shots are so beautiful and unique! I've never seen a technique quite like this before and absolutely love the effect you have captured here! I have always been charmed by lights & colors, and you have showcased both in a most amazing way! I feel that you are "painting with light" by your method. Bravo! 😊
I found this post because a link was shared on the Steemit Ramble discord server by @dynamicgreentk — so, many thanks to him!
Awesome! Thank you, glad you like this "painting with light" technique. It's super fun to shoot this way.
And thank you to @dynamicgreentk for mentioning the post on Steemit Ramble! I'm sorry I missed the ramble and I'll have to check out the show again some time. Cheers!
