They're Back: Very Rare and Peculiar Wildflowers

in #photography6 years ago (edited)

A few day ago, I went back to the spot where I had seen the very rare fritillary (Fritillaria meleagris), kievitsbloem in Dutch, last year.

This plant is extinct in the wild in Belgium and also in most places in The Netherlands.

But ... they were back!

This one wasn't fully open yet, but the photo does show the grace of the whole plant:

And another one:

Last year, I also saw the even rarer white version, but no luck yet this year. Here's an older photo of that flower:

And a photo of a group of them, also made last year:

It's good to see they survived.

Thanks for watching!

WOW!!!
They are incredible....make sure you keep the exact location a secret :-)

It's hard to keep such things a secret in such a small and crowded country; there's almost alway a walking path somehere nearby.

I'm sure only weirdos like us would appreciate their rareness anyhow :-)

Could well be 8-).

They are a wonder. :-)

Congratz, your post has been resteemed and, who knows, will maybe appear in the next edition of the #dailyspotlights (Click on my face if you want to know more about me...)

It is good to see that they have survived @ocrdu. Pretty photographs.

I'm not sure if we have any in the wild in the UK but they are quite a few in managed woodland. I haven't seen any this year though and I've never seen a white fritillary. Maybe it's time to go on the hunt! 😁

It is! The white ones are really pretty. About 3% of them in the little habitat where I made photos last year were white, but they tell me that is an unusually high percentage.

Well that's intertesting @ocrdu I would have thought the majority around here were white but maybe that's in volume rather than different types.

The others are mostly pink I think. 😊

I saw these once in Scotland many years ago but I cannot say whether they were wild or had been planted out. Beautiful flowers!

There's an ongoing debate on whether these are native to the UK or not, but they used to be abundant in some places there.

Brilliant macrophoto, especially the first one. Those flowers look sad and gigantic!

Thank you for introducing us to this exquisite and rare flower @ocrdu I have never heard nor seen them before and they certainly are unique. I love that deep cerise colour........(is that a legitimate colour?) (lol) with the lighter shades which give them an interesting look and texture. Your last image of a group of 5 of them is very beautiful.

Cerise could well be a colour; I, as a man, do not know such things 8-). Still, it is French for "cherry", so I can make a guess 8-).

I don't think these flowers made it to Australia, and with your strict laws for such things also have not been imported for gardens and the like.

Yes, Australia and New Zealand have very strict quarantine rules therefore viewing such unique flowers is a treat.

Now getting back to their colour. Hmmmmmm Cherry or Cerise? That’s is the question......I’ve eaten cherries 🍒 that are more Scarlet than Red and more Plum coloured than Magneta. And after having another look at these Rare and Peculiar wildflowers I’m beginning to wonder if my first assessment was not 100% Perhaps if I remove my 😎 sunglasses I’d get a more accurate picture. Ahhhhh 👀 that’s better. They’re not cherry or cerise, or scarlet, plum or even magenta. They are a definite shade of Burgundy!!!!!!!😁😁😁😁😁

Women! I'm going to lie down for a bit to let that all sink in.

Wise Man! 🧐

What a spectacular flower! This is totally new to me, I have never seen such a flower before.

Nooit eerder gezien, erg mooi!
