Moths: Dun-Bar
This is a dun-bar (Cosmia trapezina), strangely named hyena in Dutch. Maybe it got that name because its caterpillars aren't vegetarians; they eat other caterpillars.
Its wingspan varies from 25 to 35mm (1 to 1.4") and it is found in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. It flies at night from July to September and is attracted to light and sugar and sometimes to nectar-rich flowers.
This is the only one I have ever spotted during the day:
Olympus Stylus 1s, 42mm, ISO200, f5.6, 1/40s
Do you see a mask on this one, with eyes that stare at you? That's just your imagination; really, it is. Still with us, Ms. Barnes?
Thanks for watching!
Previous in series: Green Longhorn.
Great information and beautiful picture... Actually it looks like a lady who wears a fur for the night ball..
And yes I can see the mask... Insects and all the other creatures which are hunting try to protect themselves by naturally...
Thank you for sharing beautiful pictures and pragmatic informations about this creature... Have a nice day my friend... :)
