Australian Monday: Sunset at Convict Ruins on Maria Island
The days I spent on Maria Island were amongst my favourite days of my bicycle trip through Tasmania. Maria Island was established as a convict settlement in the 18th century and has been uninhabited since the remaining farmers left the island in the 1940s. Today, Maria Island is a national park without any vehicles and impresses with beautiful nature and an abundance of wildlife - perfect for cycling!

I wonder why they all left the island! I read a book based on the first settlements in Botany Bay and it was super fascinating! Kinda surprised they all didn't give up and leave too after reading that haha
Sorry, I somehow missed your comment.. Apparently they were trying to establish some businesses on the island, but in the Grand Depression they all failed. Some farmers staid on the island until the 1960, but I guess it was just too remote there..
Ohh ok that makes sense. It's ok, I miss comments sometimes too
