Forest Fire / Waldbrand
Over the weekend we visit my parents at home in Oberdrauburg. A few miles before I arrived in my hometown, yesterday afternoon a fire engine with flashing blue lights overtook me. |
Wir besuchen über das Wochenende meine Eltern zu Hause in Oberdrauburg. Wenige Kilometer bevor ich in meinem Heimatort angekommen bin, hat mich dann gestern Nachmittag ein Feuerwehrauto mit Blaulicht überholt. |

At home, my mother and father used binoculars to look at the opposite side of the valley (about 1.5 km / 4.900 ft as the crow flies), where smoke has risen pretty high up among the trees in the steep rock face. | Zu Hause haben meine Mutter und mein Vater mit dem Fernglas zur gegenüberliegenden Talseite (etwa 1,5 km / 4,900 ft Luftlinie) geschaut, wo Rauch ziemlich weit oben zwischen den Bäumen in der steilen Felswand aufgestiegen ist. |

A police helicopter has continuously brought firefighting water with an attached container from the river Drau and dumped it above the forest fire. | Ein Polizeihubschrauber hat in einem angehängten Behälter laufend Löschwasser von der Drau geholt und oberhalb des Waldbrandes abgeschüttet. |

Later, two more helicopters were added, and they flew until it was dark. | Später sind noch zwei weitere Hubschrauber dazugekommen, und sie flogen bis es dunkel geworden ist. |

They came back this morning and continued pouring water over the area until the afternoon to make sure all the embers were extinguished. | Heute Vormittag sind sie dann wieder gekommen und haben bis zum Nachmittag laufend weiter Wasser über dem Bereich abgeschüttet, um sicherzustellen, dass alle Glutnester ausgelöscht werden. |

In a forest fire it is always good to be able to get enough water from a lake or from a river nearby. | Bei einem Waldbrand ist es immer gut, wenn man in der Nähe genug Wasser aus einem See oder aus einem Fluss holen kann. |

What fantastic shots and good that they were able to contain and stop it before it spread forest fires can be very scary

They had a lot to do to extinguish the fire, although it was only a small one, but they did a pretty good job.
It was interesting to watch the helicopters flying, on the first day, but they came back the next morning and flew until the late afternoon - helicopters are quite loud as you might know from your time in the army ;)
Your making good use of that new lens :) it must have been so interesting to experience and yes i know how loud they can be both from the army and seeing and hearing ones flying around the city
I have seen some forest fires before, but never so close to my home, and I have never had such a good view on a fire before 😎

And you seem to be very steady back in my army days I got called out to help with a couple of fie fighters real hard work and gave me a big respect for people that do that regularly

Ohh yes thats a mode I do forget about and should make more use of, I did see an Eagle this morning and it was sitting still looking down over the beaches, a 150--600 would have been great to have i must say LOL
I use this mode since I have the 150-600, and sometimes with the macro lens.
I haven't seen an eagle for ages, but I know some places in the mountains, where I could see one, if I am patient enough - that's another idea for my list. I think, now I should really start writing into my notebook ;)

Wenn sich der Brand, der sich angeblich mehr unter der Erde in Form von Glutnestern abgespielt hat, weiter nach oben ausgebreitet hätte, dann wäre es schlimmer geworden. Unterhalb der Felsen verläuft zudem noch eine vielbefahrene Bundesstraße. Aber jetzt ist alles wieder OK :)
So lucky! They did a good job! The weather must be very dry up the mountains!!
Yes, it has not been raining in this area for a while, and the forest is really dry, but luckily they managed to kill the fire completely, before it could burn more than just small place.

They say, it was either ember from of a lightning, which started the fire, or someone has thrown a cigarette away, because right above the rock face there is a path to some caves.

Thank you so much, Melinda. Yes, we were glad too, because if the fire had spread upwards, then a quite big forest would have been in danger, and below that spot there is the only road through the valley.
