Amazing Achilleion in Corfu - Trip you should not miss (A few more steps through story about one beautiful summer in Greece)
Achilleion is a palace build by Empress Elisabeth of Austria, more known like Sisi.
Palace is located at hill Gastouri, just few minutes drive from Kerkyra. As you sail near to Corfu harbor, palace is one of amazing views that are going to welcome you to this magical island.
Central figure of this place is, of course, Achilles - mystical hero, central figure of Trojan War with only one weak spot - his heel. Well, I guess that everybody seen that movie... if nothing else, there was a Brad Pit in it ;)
Place is stunningly beautiful and very ingenious. A little bit out of place, but again fully integrated in surroundings. Out of place, because it's Austrian palace in Venetian architectural paradise. Ok, to fully understand what I mean, you should probably read one of my previous post about amazing architecture of Corfu. Located at hill, surrounded by forest and sea, Achilleion offers some amazing views to beautiful Corfu.
Sisi was beautiful women, but very, very sad. She tragically lost her only son, and she was mourning him until she died. Palace is like her life - beautiful at every step, but strangely sad at the same time. Palace is ode to powerful, strong, beautiful woman who had everything, except the one thing she wanted most. It's a melancholic reminder that money and power cannot buy you everything.
If you visit Corfu, this is one of places you simply must visit. It will show you life of one of most respected Empress in Austrian history. It will show you how beautiful architecture of those era was. But most of all, it will send you back in time and get you closer to one of greatest period in modern human history.

That is small chapel inside palace. Whole Achilleion is art work of some of the most gifted artist from that time. Amazing place!
