Cherry Blizzard :: Beautiful Japan #41
Scattering cherry blossoms. It doesn't get much better than this.
This is the best part of the cherry blossoms, towards the end of their life when the wind sends them scattering in what is known as 桜吹雪 sakura fubuki or cherry blossom blizzard. It really does feel like a blizzard too. The most common kind of cherry blossom in Japan is Yoshino Cherry (染井吉野 someiyoshino) and they plant this tree just about everywhere. You will often find at least one park in every city that has hundreds of the trees. You can imagine how hundreds of cherry trees losing their blossoms in the wind might look.
The event is a little tougher to photo because it's hard to time the gusts of wind, but occasionally we can get lucky, as I did for this shot.
