Hiking in Great Falls, along the Potomac River.

Dear Steemit Friends,

I would like to share one of the most spectacular hikes in Maryland and Virginia. I would say it’s one of the popular hikes among tourists who visit DMV area (DC, Maryland and Virginia). I’m not talking about those tourists who come to DC and spend their whole vacation in museums, galleries and monuments, I’m talking about people who like to explore local forests, farms, national parks, waterfalls and Mother Nature in general.

The picture is taken during this summer.

So, rent a car and drive to Great Falls Park. You can hike on Maryland side and on Virginia side. I was always hiking on Virginia side, since I moved here, but one of my friends told me that the trails on Maryland side are a little better. So, from that moment I hike in Maryland, and I actually like that side more. I would say I come here 3-4 times during the summer and 2 times during fall.

As you can see from the map below Potomac River divides Maryland and Virginia states. We are hiking Billy Goat trail here.

You don’t need to be prepared to hike the trail, it’s actually pretty easy, but very rocky, so wear comfortable shoes. Also, if you have some kind of knee problem, I wouldn’t’ recommend go hiking there, since some rock scrambling is required as well. Also, this trail can be hazardous in wet weather. One more tip – I recommend to arrive on a week day here, it’s pretty crowded on the weekends. It can get so crowded that you might wait 30-40mins in a line to get into the park.

And of course, the main sightseeing is waterfalls.

The past 3 pictures are from my first hike in Great Falls, from October 2011, when I just immigrated in US. The quality is not that great since I lost original photos and could find them only on my Facebook page.

It’s not a problem, if you are not a hiker, and you would like to see just the waterfalls. There’re couple overlooks with an amazing view on Potomac river with waterfalls. Also there is a small museum you can spend some time at. There is a bike lane in case you want to get some exercise. You can actually rent a bike during the summer season – it’s a good option too.

Overall, it’s a pretty amazing trail and you will definitely have fun.

Name of a trail: Billy Goat
Hiking time: it took me just 2 hours but for the whole loop you might need 4.5 hours plus a half hour for lunch.
Elevation: 280 ft
Coordinates for parking: 39.00224, -77.24664

Some more information on the trail you can find here.

Have a great hiking!!!

My other hiking adventures in DMV area:

1. Sugarloaf Mountain Hike/ Maryland

2. August 21st - solar eclipse in Virginia, next one will come in 2024 (from Russian immigrant)

3. Assateague Island – on a mission to find peace …

Looks like a nice place to have a hike, and those falls look amazing. I sure do miss that climate and vegetation here in Acapulco Mexico but every place has its pros and cons.
