Fly My Uglies! - Macro Insect Photography With Off-Camera Flash

in #photography8 years ago (edited)

I never use a tripod for macro work, choosing instead to use a flash for the extra exposure requirements. Having some assistance from my friend Vajola during the week, I was able to light these macros from different angles.

Often I use my flash on-camera with a ring light or other modifier. This is usually more than adequate, but with the assistance of another person to hold the flash at different angles from the subjects, one is able to get more interesting lighting.

We went to the local botanical gardens and it wasn't long before the mini beasties presented themselves.

I wasn't aware of the scattering particles until I uploaded this photo to my computer. I suspect the geraniums are releasing pollen into the air.

We lit this little sucker from the extreme side. Notice how much more texture comes out with the dramatic lighting. I called him a sucker because his labellum can be seen extended onto the leaf. Most houseflies have long spongey mouth pieces which dissolve their food before sucking it up.

This guy was fidgety. I got about 15 shots of his ugly butt before he finally turned to face me, Hmmm still ugly! I got this one lucky shot before he flew off. Typical prima donna model really.

I've been asked by the awesome @jamtaylor to be on the judging panel for this weeks Steemit Photo Challenge. I'm absolutely honoured to be involved in the most successful competition on Steemit, so have spent the last few days looking at all of the entries. The standard of #photography on Steemit is superb.

As requested I plan to write about my macro gear and technique in more detail, so if that interests you, please follow me @condra and expect that article very soon. As part of the judging panel, my shots this week cannot be entered into the competition. I couldn't just let them sit on the computer though, so here I am, setting these little suckers free....

I think it might be too late, but the steemitphotochallenge this week was macro. If you have time, enter these in! All you have to do is put the tag in your post. Love the bugs, great shots!

Hey @queenmountain. I'm on the judging panel this week so can't enter. Thanks for thinking of me though!

Ah, I see. I entered in a few things, but I take photos with my phone so I don't think I can compete with the pro cameras/photographers. Just curious, what is the criteria for judging? Do people taking photos with phones stand a chance? I have a Galaxy S7 which takes great photos but pales in comparison.

Jam states in the details that you can mention the medium/gear used, as it might make the photo that bit more impressive. However, cell phones have amazing cameras these days so we would still expect great photos.

Personally, I'm looking for what I believe make a good picture, regardless of the camera, such as composition, simplicity, visual impact, focus, uniqueness, colour, lighting.

The judging involves a lot of discussion. I imagine this week I'll have extra sway, but ultimately the decision lies with Jam. Best of luck.

Amazing! Very detailed and sharp.
I'd like to know what f-stop you used.
I'd be grateful if you could suggest me how much I should use for a 18-55 mm at full zoom. I shot at F/5.6 and photos were not as sharp.

Great shots! I'd love to enter the contest but I don't really do any macro. I've only done one marco and it was of the inside of a recording console... Not really nature if you ask me :)

That sounds cool though. Please let me know if you post it so I can have a look :)

Only just saw this, I'm still learning how to use steemit apparently... I will have to dig it out, I don't think it became part of my main portfolio so I'll have to find it :)

I found it going through my flickr page, but on my hard drive is another story.... It will be easier to post this here instead of open up a can of worms to find this on my drives.... It's so old it was shot with my D300, my first digital camera!

TYVM! Usually I don't use such dramatic lighting, but I think it suits the fly!
