Golden Fields and Mountainsides. Now with mawr elk skull.

At the suggestion of @johannpiber, I am making a proper post of the pastoral vistas from the flanks of Maple Mountain. My last post was kind of schizophrenic; it was mostly about lightning and a distant stormy sunset, then I crammed in a couple photos from the next day's hike and threw an elk skull on top.

The golden fields and mountainsides deserve their own post. Also, more elk skull. The cover image was published previously, the rest of this is fresh content. I hope you are getting outside and enjoying the sunsets, wherever you are :)

A giant lake filled the Utah Valley during the last ice age, and as it receded it left well defined benches on the mountainsides that mark where the shoreline was at different times. These flat benches between the canyons that cut down across them are wonderful for leisurely sunset strolls along the flank of the mountain, with amazing views of the countryside below and the lake in the distance.

Looking northwest up the valley - you can see the bench we are hiking on clearly as it extends up across the lower slopes of Grindstone Ridge, Powerhouse Mountain and Buckley Mountain. Y Mountain / Provo Peak is the darker mountain you can see poking up beyond the last sunlit peak.

Looking south down the valley over Mapleton

Panorama view down the bench toward Maple Mountain, across the valley, and up the bench toward Grindstone Ridge / Hobble Creek Canyon

Occasionally you come across an ancient stream bed filled with interesting rounded river rocks, now high above the canyons carrying water today.

Kudos to @thingone for finding the elk skull while bushwacking on his own down a dry creek bed at the base of Maple Canyon before we climbed up onto the bench. He is a little explorer, and was tickled pink to find a skull with antlers attached.

So beautiful there! I have never been to Utah, I now have an urge to visit one day soon.

Utah is really gorgeous. I didn't know what to expect when we moved out here for my wife's job, but I have really been enjoying it.

Thank you so much for mentioning me, @carlgnash, I appreciate it, and hank you for accepting my suggestion and made a separate post.
I don't think, that you'll regret it. You have made a very good and interesting post with a lot information and the photos show a beautiful landscape.

@thingone trying to catch that butterfly is a cool animation, I like it :)

Thank you 😊

No problem - thank you for your comment, I had just kind of thrown those last couple photos in my last post almost as an afterthought, and your comment made me go back and look at them in a new light. I realized, shoot, you were right, the golden light on the mountainside was actually a really nice shot. So, thanks for your good eye :)

You're much welcome, @carlgnash, it was a pleasure for me to see your photos 😊

those antlers/skull are worth a small fortune in the right market...

So is the kid I am sure :)

WOW, such beautiful photos. it deserves to be included as wallpaper calenders. The photo makes even a skull look aesthetic.

Hey thanks that is a good compliment!

I reckon a couple of these images would benefit from a nice high contrasty black and white treatment. Explorer kids are the best, we have one too.

You thinking the skull images RE the B&W treatment?

This nature looks there very cool :) If I can then I want walk there every day 2h and try photography this big mountains and also this strong sun.

Yeah it is really beautiful. It is HOT and dry down on the valley floor but as soon as you get up on the benches on the side of the mountain there is always a constant breeze coming down the canyons from the heat differential between the valley and the mountaintops. We try to get up on the side of the mountain almost every day

This sounds very good :)
