📷Saying goodbye to Monkeys🐵 - 跟猴子🐵说再见 (by @ace108)

Introduction | 简介

Being a rather modern city (I like to think), some people think Singapore lacks biodiversity. This is truly not the case. At the very least, we still have many monkeys around. No, I mean the real monkeys. They mostly resides in the nature reserves of which a few are primarily around the earliest reservoirs of Singapore. MacRitchie Reservoir is our oldest reservoir. Like many other reservoirs in Singapore, it is a place for recreation too. People go there for walk, run and water activity like canoeing. For me, sometimes, it’s just good to walk around and meet some monkeys. A few years ago, I was practising taiji myself among a group of monkeys who are just minding their own business. Early last year, I went to another reservoir to look at them to say “Hi” because the year of monkey started. Recently, I went to MacRitchie reservoir to say “Goodbye” to the monkey as the year of the monkey is ending. Here are some photos I took.

These native monkeys are quite accustomed to humans being around. Many people have fed them and I heard it is not advisable because it takes away their “work” of looking for own food. So much so, they will come looking for food from the humans but they are also quite fearful of us. Make no mistake in leaving your food or drinks visible. They don’t hesitate much to run and grab it and quickly scurry away perhaps to the nearest tree.
These few were just wandering around as nobody has any food for them. For a moment, one was scavenging a drink can and another was fighting over the can with it. There was a group of three that seems to be from a family - a parent and two offsprings.

Goodbye monkeys |

After some time, mama starts looking for her babies.

I saw them first. They climbed up a tree and jump on top of the lamp post. Mama was like saying: It’s late. Let’s go home.

No, no just some monkey business there. There is actually lots of monkey business there.
There are actually quite a lot of monkeys in Singapore.
This study here said between 1,800 to more than 2,000: https://lkcnhm.nus.edu.sg/nus/images/data/raffles_bulletin_of_zoology/vol63/63rbz503-515.pdf
So, lots of monkeys. lots of monkey business.
Thanks for your comment.

Believe it or not but once one of these kind of monkeys stole my spectacles! :)

I heard a Japanese colleague told me he lost a watch to one at a golf course. I suspect that monkey was trained.
I personally saw a monkey creep up to a big guy from behind and snatch his water bottle.
So, YES, i believe.

That is very cool! Them cheeky monkeys!!

Yes, I think it's pretty cool to see them up close too.
Thanks for your comment.

@ace108 you understand monkey talk, too?
you sneaky man
are they just loose?
that's cool - not wild or harmful or aggressive?

I understand they are trying to grab my food all the time.
They are wild but mostly not harmful though aggressive sometimes.
