How fast is your camera? No Filters/editing this time!

Using the "expert" mode of my phone's rear camera, I adjusted the shutter speed to the highest possible without darkening the image of this exhaust fan as it spins.

There are many factors that affect how a camera can effectively capture moving subjects. In these Photos, I compared my Oppo F5 with my Canon EOS1300D and the former gave me totally unexpected results!

Does it have a rolling shutter of some sort? I remember seeing this iPhone video where it shows guitar string oscillations.

As for the Oppo F5, I haven't found a review saying why it produces such effects!

Still Picture quality

The Oppo F5 captures pretty decent stills. Nothing spectacular, by any stretch of the imagination, but our samples still came out with a nice level of detail and relatively high dynamic range. Noise is also kept at bay well. Colors are also nice and natural. Source

On the other hand, my Canon EOS1300D performed as I expected. -The faster the shutter, the more light I needed. I went up to ISO1600 and got acceptable results without a flash. - I had to use a flashlight though since the sun's already high and sunlight no longer penetrates the small bathroom windows. Using ISO3200 makes the picture too noisy so I settled with 1600

It's so much easier with a flash. The maximum shutter speed allowed when the flash is up is only 1/200. The short burst of light freezes the action, not the shutter speed.

Conclusion

You can't use a flash for fast action with a smartphone like the Oppo F5. It slows the shutter down to 1/30 and makes it very difficult to frame your shot since it flashes twice. The first flash is for light-metering and the second one is when the picture is actually taken.

The DSLR definitely wins for fast action! - No distortion (but no art photography like the distorted fan)! You can use the flash with a DSLR and freeze the action. Also, changing the settings is actually faster using the respective camera buttons compared to using a touchscreen.
