🐡 A Nice Trip to Malabon Zoo! (Part1: Aquariums) 😻
It's one of the best places in town for a family to visit on a weekend.
It's probably my third time being here. I was still in primary or secondary school when I last went here with my cousins.
Now, I have a wife and a kid to take here!
You won't find any lions, giraffes or elephants in this zoo. -None of those famous big African animals but there is a good number of species here and they're all great to see.
Let's have a look at the aquariums first.
I really enjoyed the Arapaima aquariums because that was the first time I saw fish longer than I'm tall.
The longest recorded was 15 feet!
The arapaima looks more like a prehistoric torpedo than a fish.
The meat of this fish (also known as paiche or pirarucu) is boneless, odorless, and mild-tasting, making it a prized catch for both local fishermen and chefs abroad. Because its meat is delicious, it's considered an exotic delicacy in many countries where they're scarce.
This species is also called "a living fossil" since this is one of the "vintage models" which came from nature's "production line".
Among other fishes is this colorful catfish which continually skims on the glass on its side making it one of the most challenging attractions to photograph.
I had to use the flash since the water was murky.
It's a very nice place to practice your photo composition...
...And capture some action!
These photos were not easy for me to come up with due to lack of light. The good thing is they're mostly slow swimmers.
The turtles were in clearer water and unsurprisingly, you will find similar shots easily.
There are also lots of Koi fish! - My favorite!
..And a bizzare-looking one.
Some say that the zoo isn't well-maintained for the high entrance fee but I guess I have to consider that it is a privately run zoo which means that they might have limited funds in maintaining the place.
Because of these dark tanks, I had to deal with overexposed photos later. -Lesson learned: Look at the light meter first before finalizing your composition.
