Gray Ghosts

Some Mountain Caribou lock antlers in a mock fight. Sadly I just found out that two of these amazing animals were shot dead the week before last from this small herd in Northern BC. The situation has been described as dire for the Central Mountain Caribou population by the Federal Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). Numbers of Central Mountain Caribou across Alberta and B.C declined by 60 per cent between 2004 and 2014 to just over 500 mature individuals in 11 herds. Its so sad that we are not that far from a future of having no Mountain Caribou anywhere in the rocky mountains. The mountain caribou have evolved to deal with deep snow-packs and a complex life high in the mountains and are physically quite different from their northern arctic cousins and European reindeer who roam the vast frozen plains. Makes you wonder how you can control poaching in places like Africa if you can’t even stop shooting of endangered animals in a highly educated first world country like Canada.

Three months ago I put an extended post up on Steemit about the fate of the Mountain Caribou here which has lots of my shots of this herd and was one of my first posts up on Steem to grain any traction as it was picked up by Curie. I have since been back to the same spot a couple of times to document these majestic animals again, which is when I took the shot above.

In the US it is even more dire with the last small herd remaining in the lower 48 states found in the Selkirk Mountains of Northern Idaho. A survey in 2017 found only 11 animals down from from hundreds not that long ago. The New York times wrote an article in 2016 called America's Gray Ghosts which talks about the battle to save the last herd of the once mighty animals, but it seems the greater US has simply written off Caribou in the lower 48 states.

What amazing animals, so special to see in the wild!

Yes they are amazing creatures. Hopefully they are still there in generations to come.

Yes I really hope so too!

Humanity... there is no words... was it dangerous to capture photo?

:_(
I was writing a very sad and angry comment about humans... but I am going to take a deep breath now, relax and recover and just say that the photo is really beautiful. You are the master of framing. Thank you.

Yes its hard to fathom. Makes me so angry also.

Thats sad about being shot down :/ but its a beautiful capture with perfect timing x

Yes it's so sad.

amazing ! did you ask those deers to pose for you ? HOW can you catch this scenary with this high precision ? You are really a great artist !
now, the sadness is here... I chose to feel it and let it go... with the Wind.

Thanks. You just need to spend enough time hiding in the snowy woods. Its getting harder and harder as their numbers collapse to see them.

so, you transform yourself into a shadow in order to catch the light, right ? a magician too, you are.

lol. I wish ;-)

if you wish then you ARE ! keep on feeding us with you wonderful glance. Thank you Rob.

Great post and awesome framing. Really sad to know that there are so few left and that they are still being shot dead.

Yes. It is sad. Unfortunately most people don't realise how quickly their numbers are collapsing and see large herds of arctic Caribou on the TV which undermines any chance at widespread support to protect the much rarer Mountain Caribou.

Great photograph i am always amazed by good wildlife photography, great capture and i bet it took some patience to get a shot like this.

its a shame hunting animals in the wild such as these still goes.

Woww. Amazing work! You are so lucky to see this amazinG moment. How many meters is there between you and animals?

I am perhaps 10 to 15 m away. Its shot with a 400mm lens. They are very skittish animals.

You can see some other photos here

I checked your more shots. Is it safe to be there for you? Do they attack you?

They dont like being disturbed so its important to be very quiet and stay your distance. Let them come closer to you while you remain hidden rather than move closer to them. Like any deer they wont attack unless your are physically hassling them (or get too close to a female with a baby). The main risk is if they get frightened like any herd animal they will run as a mob and you could be trampled. All the shots taken at 400mm so quite a large zoom.

Hello @intrepidphotos!

First of all, your name seems familiar, I think I may have seen your posts few times that I can't recall that much. But now, I will be.

Now, for your photo - it's captivating. You were able to capture the action that isn't intrusive to your subject/s. After all, you were talking about respect to this creatures. And you did a great job expressing through your picture and through your words. I applaud you for that. #respect

Lastly, I feel sad about these two Mountain Caribou lock antlers. As much as I want to wish them well, I'd rather wish them peace.

Keep up the good work buddy!

Thanks. Respect is very important. Yes all my wildlife shots are taken with a 400mm lens so its important to keep a healthy distance from them and not disturb them. They were just practice fighting so don't feel bad about the locked antlers; thats what they do !

That's good to know, from where I am at right now, this scene doesn't exist. Im living a city life. It's great to share photos and thoughts especially if both is on the opposite side of the world.

About your lens, I think thats a huge undertaking, those are the things that a fully dedicated photographer would aspire to have. It comes with a price and pressure to take outstanding pictures. Looking at your work, you obviously did justice for having it.

Thanks. I use the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM . Its not the cheapest lens for sure but to get a Fluorite element in a Nikon lens is about 3 times the price. So its all relative.

Thanks for info also :-)
Lastly, im looking forward to your upcoming posts.

I had a nice & meaningful chat with you.

Good night from Singapore!
