Breaking down "This statement is False": A solution to another Paradox from @vimukthi

in #philosophy7 years ago

It's one of those impossible to answer questions. It's practically a paradox. My experience with paradoxes is that they always arise from inaccurate/false premises or ignorance of the elements involved. As for an example on a longer timescale drowning accidents goes up during the times of higher Popsicle sales. How could this happen? It doesn't make sense. How come 2 unrelated things become correlated? Isn't it impossible? There is a simple answer: Summer!

If you bother to look from a different angle and wash away your ignorance you can realize that during the heat people tend to jump into the water more often. More people in water means more people drowning. The opposite happening during winter further establishes the results when people buy less Popsicles and take hot water showers.

First let's look at "This statement is True". So what information does this non-paradoxical statement say? It says it's true; but it doesn't carry any more information. It says it's true but doesn't contain any truths (or even lies). It's a Stand Alone non-contextual Statement. Let me use a much simpler term: fiat

Ever heard the term that the dollar doesn't worth the paper it's printed on. Why? Because it's hollow and isn't backed by anything. I could go on Waves Lite Client and make a token called Paradoxcoin and share it. But it wouldn't really have any value as it has no use. The token will just exist on it's own and that's it. In the Waves Platform there is an asset called "Mark of Marousi" which is sort of a fun joke where you have to send the "Mark of Marousi" to someone else as soon as you get it because you are a "Marked" person after you receive it (like the VHS from Ring).

Now take a look at "This statement is False". I'll ask you "What statement?" and what's going to be your answer. Just like the previous statement, there is zero information included in the statement. It's just the word "True" and the word "False".

Think you are in a computer software or a flow chart. At many times you'll encounter events where it says/checks "XYZ Statement is true/false". This XYZ has a certain context/meaning.

I highly recommend you check out 2 of my posts where I talk about the 2 layers of truth.

I'll quote few parts from those posts for ease.

Not too long ago there were scientists talked and researched and wrote about Luminiferous aether which allowed light to travel through empty space. The entire concept was a mess created through false premises that lead to search a hypothetical medium that allowed the light to travel through space. These days we don't even talk about these things. We need to think different and think simple.

Fields in empty space have physical reality; the medium that supports them does not.

In the same manner,

Correlations have physical reality; that which they correlate does not.

This is where the 2 truths come from. There is the truth of Correlations such as a Father isn't a Mother and 2+2=4 These things are real. But where does this reality originate from? That is the truth of correlata. If you change the language, all the talks about mothers and fathers become gibberish. V+V=X

Each word in the dictionary has a definition. Each word is defined by other words. Words have meanings in relation to other words and in relation to other words only. It's a web of correlationships, But only those correlationships are objectively true. There is no origin point of meaning. A is A because it's called A. I think I am; Therefor I am.If you take the above statement as true, you'd have to accept 2 layers of truths.
#1 A is A. Period.
#2__There is no real meaning to A.__
A dictionary is a meaningless book containing objective meanings (as in A Tiger isn't a Hippo and hitting someone's crotch isn't a way to greet someone)

The Truths and Lies does not exist in a Vacuum. Any statement can be True or False regardless of what they claim to be just as anybody that is taken to the court can be guilty or not guilty regardless of what they claim to be.

Without a relation to a statement..... without context......."This statement is True" and "This statement is False" are nothing but "True" and "False" with additional drivel. Slapping the terms "True" or "False" on a random blank space without any content carries zero meaning.

A person with schizophrenia or a person under a hallucinogenic substance may see and hear things. Also there are poisons that screw up a person's neurological systems so much that Ice would feel like burning and the freshly made Coffee would feel like a cool drink. • "This statement is True"
  • "This statement is False"
  • "True"
  • "False"
  • A random token with no utility or functionality

A statement and the accuracy of the statement are 2 separate thing. A token needs a platform and utility to function on. Truth and False needs a claim to be used on. Truth and False doesn't have individual value. They have meaning in relation to other things. Truth and False doesn't have an end in themselves.

That's my breakdown of an ancient Paradox. I haven't seen this kind of a breakdown/answer/explanation anywhere. So please resteem for other people to see. I had great fun tacking the question as a response to  @durzo You can thank him for the intellectual fun ride you had.

These things take bit of time to produce. Figuring out an answer is easy. Presenting it properly is very much more difficult. So sorry if I made things confusing. Resteem to get more people into the thinking business.
