How to Cultivate Awareness

in #philosophy7 years ago (edited)

There is no such thing as good habits and bad habits. Habit means living life without awareness.

_This blog comes as an inspiration from my Guru Sadhguru.
Sadhguru looks at how we can use our likes and dislikes to cultivate awareness, so that it seeps into every aspect of our life

Cultivating Awareness

Most of us claim that we are living a mindful life. A life with complete awareness, but what does this awareness mean. Is it about getting up every day in morning and start following the daily routine? Setting beliefs for your own self that things should happen in this or that particular manner. With beliefs and patterns there are times when we get hooked and addicted to them even without a realization.

Then how can we say that it’s a life of Awareness that we are living.

Say you get up everyday morning and the first thing you want to do is read your newspaper, One day the newspaper is not around and then what is your reaction. Are you calm and go about doing other things or is it that the absence of this small thing creates a kind of discomfort or disturbance. So reading a newspaper kind of becomes a compulsion for you. And if the absence has created a disturbance within you that means this is a habit of complete unawareness.

We believe that our lives are in perfect harmony, but there are times when a small incident happens in our life and we get disturbed and it’s just because things didn’t happen the way we wanted to. So then are we saying we are living a life full of external experiences which are completely in control of our physical senses and not a life of self-awareness.

When we want to work towards a state of Awareness, it means being in the present. We live with choices but what we say that we are making conscious choices are more of formed habits and patterns that we have developed for our own self and they become unconscious choices for us.

Doing what's Uncomfortable

All our habits come into existence because of our certain level of thought process or a belief system that we are hooked into. When we challenge both of these that is when we are able to break the barriers and truly start living a life of Awareness.

We have set our lives with what is most comfortable to us. We all have capacity to scale up any heights, but it is how far are we willing to go ahead bringing out own self into a zone of discomfort. Anything that is done as a habit becomes a pattern and brings you in a comfortable zone, which may not be very good for you. Are we willing to challenge ourselves each moment and defy these habits or do we want to continue in the rut, it all depends on us.

Challenging yourself every time brings you to a heightened level of awareness and you would know your true potential of what you are capable of doing.

For example one person who has never done Yoga, starts doing Yoga one fine day, for sure it’s a lot of discomfort to the body and the possibility is that the person may give up, but if the person continues and keeps challenging all the discomforts face, then one fine day the person will become proficient in Yoga and will also reap the benefits.

Only when one keeps challenging life and take up things which are completely out of comfort zone then can one see the higher energies of life and grow.

Many thanks Dropahead team for reviewing and upvoting my post. Indeed appreciated. Regards Nainaz

A very accurate and well written post. I'm in the middle of a 10 day fast - Master cleanse.. lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper.. I keep finding myself to go into the pantry to grab something to eat and then I catch myself.. "oh yeah, I'm on the fast" That is a perfect example of what you write about. Keeping consciousness allows you to be present and enjoy the things that you may have otherwise missed. Basically being present. If you are one who constantly loses your keys, then you should really work on everything @nainaztengra just wrote about. Following.

Thank you very much @jeff747. Yes its all about we stuck into our own beliefs that we can or cannot do something. When we are ready to challenge our ourselves only then we get to know our true potential

This article was upvoted by mistake. It is indeed a copy as stated by @ana-maria. Unfortunately, the source was not popular enough to be caught by the bot. I will be making adjustments to hopefully address this issue.

@nainaztengra, @OriginalWorks is designed to give everyone, especially users with less power, the much needed exposure. Please refrain from using the bot on copied articles.

Thank you.

I would really like to know how and by which criteria did you determine this article to be the original work when it's almost completely copy-pasted from the following website:
http://isha.sadhguru.org/blog/lifestyle/cultivating-awareness/

Looks like it could be an error.

Let me investigate that. Thank you for pointing it out!

May I ask why you flagged the bot? I believe the issue was dealt with fairly.

Edit: Fixed.

I flagged it before, finding it to work completely opposite than it stands for.

Removed it now, upon your reaction and comment editing and thank you for prompt reaction.

Thank you for pointing it out!

Great post ! One of my worst habits was smoking for over 30 years which I was finally able to quit 5 years ago with pure determination and the help of Thrive Gum !! LOL! The first 4 months were the worst , haha now I still chew regular gum all the time ! Thanks for sharing !👍👍👍

Wow that's great determination. Nothing is impossible if you are determined. You truly is an inspiration for a lot of people. Please do share your overall journey of quitting this most difficult habit. It'll motivate a lot of people

Awe thanks !💕✌👍

Valid point! But it's not always about resisting natural tendencies to cultivate awareness. You can carry on doing whatever you are doing with consciousness. E.g. if you are hungry, you can (and should) eat consciously. If you are conscious that you are hungry and not eating food intentionally, then probably you are ignoring your body's needs. Shouldn't one be conscious about it too?

Anything done for sufficiently longer duration tends to become a habit, if one is not conscious of it. If you never gets angry, it really becomes difficult to get angry when required because it's not your habit. Same is applicable for all types of penances too.

In fact, if you train your consciousness well enough, then always remaining conscious and aware too become a habit ...a good habit indeed! 😊

Yes very true, living life in full awareness is very very important. If ypu start being conscious about every action gradually ypu get into habit of a mindful living and you also have the ability to respond to everything around you.

Great post nainaztengra, and great to see your sharing ancient wisdom which is so needed in the modern world.. Its great to be on a similar journey..))
