The Good Thing About Controversy

in #philosophy6 years ago (edited)

Why is controversy generally a good thing? Because it bring the potential for change, whether it's ourselves or someone else that can change in the face of being wrong.

The etymology (true meaning) of the word controversial comes from the root contra "against; opposed to; on the opposite side" + versus "turned toward or against", vertere "to turn, turn back, be turned; convert, transform, translate; be changed".

Controversy means to be in opposition to or come up against something which can change you, turn you, convert you, or transform you from your current position. When in opposition, on the opposite side, you are face-to-face with the opposition. Hence, you are face-to-face with the potential to change.

There is conflict, friction, tension and interference coming up against our position, with what we are proposing, with what we are arguing for. We can be right or wrong, or the info we receive from another cane be right or wrong. But there is a conflict nonetheless.

Things can be debated and argued, but there is truth about a matter. Often when we come up against a truth, we don't want to be face-to-face up against it because it's putting pressure on nus to change. The information or idea we are attached to is being shown to be false. We don't like that. It creates a conflict within us, a tension, friction and interference in how we think about something. We can often feel this conflict and controversy turning inside of us.

Coming up against, face-to-face and in opposition to a truth means we either have to change and align ourselves with it, or risk facing consequences of being in denial of reality. We shouldn't choose to align with a truth (especially moral truth) simply because we are going to face consequences, although that is a strong motivator. Doing so for that reason would be from a personal selfish position of fear.

We should align with truth and align our behavior with moral truth because we understand it is the truth. That is the only reason required. We have to be willing to face the mirror, and accept that we know something, and know that we are going to have to change.

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

It's a truth, that controversy is a good thing, in a forward-moving society, @krnel. I also believe that, the people who have embraced a controversial way of life, will be able to change their beliefs and behaviour, according to how the society have changed.
The world in which we live is dynamic. I mean that, many things will change around us from one period of time to another. People who want to live happily, will have to change, as certain things have changed in their environment.
Our way of life should be moving, and not static. We have to change our lives to fit with what exists in the world of today. This changing of the way of life is somehow a controversial and personal issue to us. It determines the kind of lifestyle, which we will assume in the world.
I am @gboyegaogunmola. I am a writer. I am writing article on the "psychological aspect of man". I want people to solve personal problems, through reading my personality literature.
I personally think that, it is good to be controversial in certain situations of life. We have to face the truth, and keep fighting, so that the truth will prevail.
The society will not be what it is today, without the effort of our honest leaders, who were the controverts in reality. If controversy is not strong enough in a society, the people who live there, will lose their virtue of speaking the truth.
In controversial situations, people will have to face the truth, for peace and development, to prevail in their life.

I tend to agree, except on the "honest leaders" part, as most are not too honest I don't think, and they aren't too concerned with the real truth :P

I have just received the comment, @krnel. I am grateful for your concern and consideration, over my activity on the Steemit platform.
You have spoken the real truth about our leaders in the world of today. Many of them don't follow the ethics of the profession.
They will not speak the truth. They will only go after their own affairs.
I believe in what you said. I must have being optimistic about the role of leaders in the world of today. It is when we have good leaders, that we will have peace and development.
Thank you, for mentioning that point.
I am also grateful for the upvotes on my posts. It was a great pleasure.
Thank you, for your contribution.

The ego is difficult to tame. Dominating the truth, whether it be right or wrong, and prevailing against change, is what it does best.
It takes daily renewed effort to master non-resistance.
And at the end, ego is fear and it is controversial. Fear to not align with the real truth or fear to let get of an unreal truth.

The ego (I, self) is not a bad thing though, there are positives and negatives, but I get what you mean.

Of course the ego is not a bad thing, if you tame/ cultivate it beyond selfishness. so that it's not equal to that of a child.

this reminds me of the etymology of the word decision.

literally "to cut off," from de- "off" (see de-) + caedere "to cut"

controversy and decision are both things that bring change. we can avoid them, be wishy washy, agreeable, etc... but, let's face it, that's not real. at some point we have to make a decision, cut something off in choice of something else and direct our energies. it's a positive thing, really, though it can be difficult or painful to do so at times.

Yup, one choice is made among many possible ones, and they get cut off.

Controversy can be good when change is also good. Change is a neutral force and can lead to growth and development or the hijacking of truth and that which is good. One must ask certain questions to find if the controversy is good. I am for growth that leads from controversy, but one must pick their fights very carefully in life. Otherwise that person will end up with few friends. Thanks @krnel.

Conformity doesn't like controversy...

RESIST... I couldn't resist.

I tried to do what the post said and better myself, but I've failed this round.

Coming up against, face-to-face and in opposition to a falsehood means we either have to oppose it, or risk facing consequences of being in denial of reality
