Artists Also Need To Rest

in #philosophy7 years ago

...As any other successful professional does.

This is, of course, assuming that you are a sick workaholic (or practice-aholic) bastard like me.

It doesn't really matter what your profession is, if you decided to be devoted to a life of your profession, you may already have experienced some sort of obsessions and over-working on your practices or studies.

See, our brain needs rest from time to time, we are not computers (well actually we are, but not the kind of computer we are using to read this post), therefore we can't really manage the overuse of our cognitive systems. We are biologically designed to not be able to be under constant pressure such as nowadays we are. Everyday, every time.

And I am not even talking about when you are at work and you feel your boss hates you. I am even talking here,
in your resting place where you are reading this and having "spare time". Most of us would feel that we are not enough and even when we comment the things that we did or share the result of our work, it will never be enough. We will feel judged and so, we will feel stress and hurt because of the social human nature.

See, everything in our surroundings is made in such a way that it's a potential threat in one or another way.
But the worst of all, is ourselves.

We are all victims of our own self-judgement:

"I am not enough".

"I am not worthy".

"What I do is horrible".

"I won't get anywhere being like this".

Sometimes this is because of a lack of self-esteem. But other times, such as in my case mostly, it's because of an over-use of my brain to practice.

This is when the thing gets fucked up, because we human love the extremes. We love to be either absolutely productive and overcome the training, the practices, get better and unique. Or to be lazy bastards and have nothing in our mind but some chill music or the sound of nothingness.

This is why having rest times is so important, for all of us. Even some steemians that write and publish without stopping. We all need to stop from time to time, and have some rest.

And it is not only for our sanity and health. It will also improve the quality of our work. Like when you are over-trained and you just keep doing, or instead that, you decide to stop one or two days, and let the body do its job of recovering from the damage. Once you get back to it, you will be stronger and way more fresh.

Unfortunately, we are not like windows or mac machines... it would be awesome to just upload a different hard-drive and change these things that make us so harmful to ourselves. Or maybe the way that our body and mind works. But that s not possible (yet).

So please remember about your sanity, your health, keep an eye to the sleeping time. Don't neglect your health and your body. Whatever you are doing, I bet you can do way better just if you do it on its right time, and you give to your body and mind the proper care.

I am not telling this only to you but also to myself, as a friendly reminder from my inner child. Keep yours alive too.

Your dear artist friend,
Nic!.

I always try to listen to the ideas of my fellow followers to improve my posts and to give something back to the community... therefor: What would you like the next posts to be about? What should I talk about? What kind of painting? Would you like some tutorials about arts, about cooking? Maybe some fresh gaming broadcast? I would love to know!

Bye!

Great post man, beautiful artwork and very crisp formatting, you got my follow! :) You make an important point that rest is very important for workaholics which is something far too many people do not understand. However the benefits that come from honing your craft can make it hard to put down.

Absolutely, I think that it is really hard to find that sweet spot where you practiced enough and it s time for rest, this is also why I usually end up going to sleep so late: I may get a little bit further tonight, but it will take a lot of my focus and power for tomorrow morning... it s a constant equation and most of times i also fail D:

Soo true! when i overwork i tend to loose myself and feel stuck in a cycle of not going anywhere and feeling like I'm lost, but what helps me sometimes is taking a break, meditating and meeting friends and i get my charge back! but now it seems like a larger cycle over the smaller one, but i guess this is part of the journey. thank you for your post and sharing.

sie ma, I absolutly know this feeling. My drawing activity is somehow coming in cycles. There are months where im super motivated and inspired and months where i have stress and i dont want to practice drawing at all.

Im tuning into proffesional what means i will do this for a living and its always nice to read about your expiriences mate!

Oh man, I've been in the mood of "I don't want to see an artwork for weeks" since this year started... but dude, we gotta keep going! the whole point is to force it a little bit without breaking it. Mostly when we don t want to do.

If you force it enough, you will get through and probably even start enjoying it !

So true. Iits a good feeling if you done some god work even if you thought today istn your day^^

Btw it would be really awesome if you could find some time and take a look at my works and give some improvement advice. You can be totaly honest mate ;)

I just came from you there! what I see is that you can do way better if you would gather better reference... For instance, look at artists that use an anatomy that suits you better and compare them with real world anatomy, study their proportions and start applying this to your workflow. Don't use cheap 3D anatomy renders ;).

I see that you also lack of structure on your artworks, like... what s going on under the skin, and also symmetry, which I see that you came very closer to do a good symmetry and geometric shapes exercise in this post of yours.

I will just stick to drawing atm because the painting part can get very messy, so pay attention to gather beetter references and find what you like more, what artists, and what elements, proportions, shapes, themes, etc.

nothing is impossible...so never lose hope...just keep trying and one day you'll be successful because God help those who help themselves.

Well, Few things you should know. He is a professional artist, Have you seen his work? Well, you should.
-Read the article before posting your comment. People comment randomly without reading the post just to get followers. Worst thing to do.
-In case you dont know - every steemit post has an upvote button. lol

Ah... yeah... in my case, the only way to make me stop is for my body to get sick, and even that doesn't stop me for long. There is an urgency to catch up on all those periods of time when I've been a super lazy ass :)

It"s a great art and great creativity.
I expect you become reach your goal. Thanks for sharing.
I always follow your upcoming post .Thanks a lot.
