The Genesis of the Barn Raising #payitforward Initiative - A Way of Giving Thanks

in #payitforward7 years ago

The #payitforward initiative is a passion project that I've begun as a way of saying THANK YOU to the Steemit community.

I set a Steemit goal and went for it!

When I started in July,2016, I had ONE follower - the wonderful @phoenixmaid - who happened to be the one that introduced me to Steemit. I read the white papers and saw something so incredibly special here! So, with dogged determination, I posted, engaged and built to where I am today!

Just over 600 followers
Just under 5,000 posts
~5,700 SP with 12M vests

From day one, I knew I wanted to be a whale but I had to set small goals and create a pathway. One goal was to engage with the community every day. If I missed a day of posting, I spent a couple of hours reading and commenting.

Getting to 1M vests felt like it was taking forever!
I wasn't a minnow - I was still plankton!

RAWR!

Man, oh man, I wanted to reach Dolphin status before the end of the year.

I wanted it so badly that I could practically taste the ocean.

There were days when I didn't think it would ever happen. AND THEN IT HAPPENED with a couple of weeks to spare!

Now my eyes turn to the distant horizon of reaching Orca at 100M vests, which feels like a long-assed way away, so... You know... Fuck It!

I did not reach my first BIG GOAL by myself. I had all of you supporting my creativity along the way. So the #payitforward initiative is really to give back to the awesome Steemit community.

Thank you for being YOU

Many of you have been getting to know me through my blogs and comments. I've welcomed a lot of new members with the first rule of thumb in community engagement: The Three Cs

Content creation - COMMENTS - Curation

Maybe that should be 4 Cs? LOL

I press those things upon newcomers because we are a social-based platform.

People follow PEOPLE

Sure, people may follow a brand, a big name, an influencer... Yeah, it's kind of cool to rub elbows with them BUT connections are not built by association alone.

Connections are developed
through emotional and intellectual stimulation.

When you share your stories, insight, knowledge, passion, and craft, you give us an opportunity to know you - connect with you - empathize and/or accept you for the real person you are. I sincerely appreciate the people who lay it on the line. They speak their heart, express an opinion whether it's popular or not, bare their vulnerabilities. The people I follow are open to infinite possibilities. They are the doers on Steemit and in life.

Thank you for letting me be ME

Hubby and I. Best friends.

Steemit is the first platform that I've encountered which allows me to be eclectic without a filter. I've shared my fiction and nonfiction writing, sang a few songs, written a few helpful guides, and offered a view into my world.

From the marrow of my bones, I know that my calling in life is to help people.

When asked, "If money was no object, what would you do?"
My answer would be, "With food or with thought, I want to nurture the world."

Time to "frolic"

In the first #payitforward post dedicated to @klye toward his moving expenses, I explained that the Amish use the term "frolic" for cooperative work projects within a social atmosphere. Members in the community volunteer their time, skill, and resources.

If you've ever seen the movie Witness starring Harrison Ford and Kelly McGillis, you would see an example of a frolic in the barn raising scene:

When a community comes together for a single objective, that one big bitch of a task doesn't seem so ominous. In @klye's case, he needed to come up with money for moving expenses. He reached goal in FOUR DAYS thanks to the community and was able to stop his power down.

Read his celebratory post

Let's frolic some more!

Two members of our community @l0k1 and @shla-rafia face homelessness. They have both received author post rewards. John, aka @dailybitcoinnews lives quite minimally in a tiny trailer. He was able to treat himself to a little eggnog and some de-stinkifying incense for his ferret from the author rewards I sent him.

It's sucky and it hurts when you pour your heart out in a post and no one sees it or acknowledges your existence. These will always be extreme cases of need, but sometimes it's not even for a monetary boost. Sometimes people just need to be acknowledged.

What can YOU do?

Be a good Steemian. Create, Comment, Curate. Blaze your own trail. Discover new people. And if it is within your means: GIVE.

Ideas:

  • Give your time and attention
  • Direct donation - send STEEM or SBD directly to the recipient.
  • Donate proceeds from your post - Write a post and state your intention to donate to a person or cause.
  • Upvote and/or resteem content
  • Share their post on your other social media
  • Advocate for your community because one day you may need them.

Come frolic with me 'til the New Year!

This is a 50/50 post.

I will post author rewards and recipients in comments as a form record-keeping. Author rewards not specifically earmarked for an individual or group will be transferred to savings and distributed through random acts of kindness or based on immediate need. Please note: I cannot guarantee earnings.

I love that so many of us are able to spread the wealth around and bless others.

My contests are Wildcards are ways that I like to give back some of what I've been given, as I have been given so much here on steemit.

Thanks for doing what you do!

She does wonderful things :) I wanted to let you know I'm doing a fundraiser/simple contest if you'd like to check it out ;) Appreciate it.

YES!
I was going to add other people who are giving back to the community but this post was getting a bit long.
I've got the #fridayfollow post I'm working on and then I'd love to highlight the advocates and givers. If you know anyone else giving out "Wild Cards" please let me know. Thank you for what YOU do. XOXOX

I have a good cause. Our interent detective @walden is wanting to complete an investigation but he's currently struggling with some money problems I won't go into. I've sent him my Steem Dollars. What's the best way to help him further?

If it was me, I would definitely write more posts to bring attention to the plight - and follow up with a #nameinlights post for @walden which potentially helps increase their followers and upvotes.
I did notice crowdfunding support for him. I'll put him on my list. Thanks for the heads-up and good luck with your investigations. :)

#nameinlights is an initiative begun by @williambanks a few months ago. It's a way to highlight a member of the Steemit community. Basically, if you create a post and put it in the title and tag, people familiar with it tend to migrate toward it.

That'll be an interesting #nameinlights
Glad him and @beanz finally buried the hatchet at least.

What a lovely thing to do, its a nice feeling knowing there are people out there who want to help :)

From #nameinlights to art contests and random giveaways, I'm always trying to give back. Without Steemit I would not have been able to buy new glasses - and it got me through a tough time when I had more month than money and not enough food in the cupboards. I still tread a fine line but I hate to hoard.

I love you and your eclectic, sometimes spicy posts! Congratulations ....

Just plodding ahead to the next goal post - and I'm trying to bring as many people with me as I can. LOL

It is a fun word, isn't it? I don't see it used very often.
Perhaps you'll have another round of word art? :D

I don't know if I can commit to that, but there may be a guest appearance every now and then.

That would be cool! I can imagine how much work that was the first time around. :)

Congratulations my great friend @ merej99, if there is someone who deserves those successes are you.
We will be accompanied and supported from my humble place to your next goal.
Meanwhile to enjoy this. congratulations

We're racing to 70 rep and whale country @jlufer! Ready, Set, GO! LOL

Very nice reading! I hope you will get to your goal... one day ^^

One day!
Just keep swimming, right? :D

Will do the same :)

I'm going to need to learn more about "STEEM or SBD" asap! :)

hi @sycamoreroots - Welcome to Steemit!
Definitely check out THE WELCOME PAGE where there are tons of helpful articles and tools written and developed by other Steemians.
If you need help or have questions, just shout out, okay? :)

You are the biggest <3 of Steemit for me. If I could reach over there I'd pinch those cheeks so hard (but enough about me and your hottie-hubby!)

Keep on frolicing my friend!

He's definitely a keeper to put up with my weirdness.
Hey! We just had a full moon. How did Tuttle Moonthly go?

Aha! yes, I need to do a post about it and share the document, but in a nutshell: I did it, I read it back a day later and my first reactions are 1) it's too much about me and I need to find a way of writing about working with other people and 2) the process didn't feel very collaborative, it needs to involve others (you lot!)

So yeah, achievement unlocked, some lessons to be learned, thanks for asking :)

Wow. This is awesome. This is the best post I've read today.
It's nice reading your thoughts and initiatives for the platform. Reading your words reminds me of how awesome this community is.

I see your posts and comments around and its awesome to finally get the chance to drop by.

You've got a new follower in me ;) . And btw, donot give up on your orca whale goal :)

Thank you so much @infovore! There is truth when people say persistence pays off. :) It took about 4.5 months to get to dolphin. I've set an 8 month goal to reach orca whale because I'm not going anywhere. I love Steemit!

You're right. Persistence really pays off.. Best of luck.

Dropped a message for youon steemit.chat.

That's amazing @infovore. I appreciate it. I spend so much time reading that I never earmark any time to spend in the chats. I should try to make an effort.

Okay. That would be awesome.. Been involved in a number of #payitforward initiatives. So I was thinking it will be great to have you on SteemMag i.e if you're COol with it.

You got an email? I do think steemit.chat is kinda optimal though

That would definitely be cool.
My email is my username at hotmail - but I should be around all day Sunday to meet in chat if that's easier for you. I'm working at a new job tomorrow so I'll be AFK.

Hi ... Still waiting for a reply :)
