Overwatch Workshop

in #overwatch5 years ago

Hi guys,

I just recently discovered the Overwatch Workshop that has been in the Public Test Region since late last month.

About the Overwatch Workshop

It's part of the customisation features in the Game Browser, but more extensive than the options you had to create games in the test region previously, and that you have in the normal game currently.

Using their workshop you can actually use programming logic to change aspects of the game, which is new.

You have the main settings menu for making a game in the Public Test Region here:

The one in the main game is currently almost the same and is simply missing the workshop.

To get to this screen, you go to play, then game browser, then create and then settings.

From here, you can choose the maps and gamemodes (i.e. deathmatch etc) and what heroes are in the games, in both the main game and the Public Test Region. However, the Public Test Region also has the workshop.

The workshop allows us to make scripts using drop down menus that use programming logic.

Creating a script has four aspects:

  1. Add a rule
  2. Select an event
  3. Add a condition (optional)
  4. Add an action

This can be done multiple times within the script, as you likely want to change more than one thing.

I haven't yet made an Overwatch game using the Workshop or fully read the information about how to, but I can see that it is using logic I have seen in other programming.

This page which I have partially read, but not fully read and used yet explains the workshop and how to use it:

This picture here shows the basic menu for setting up rules etc within the workshop:

Tutorials

There are also tutorials for games you can make that will help you to learn how to make an Overwatch game using the Workshop. These are in the examples part of the link I shared earlier in this post that explains the process of using the workshop.
The examples that they walk you through include two modes:

  • Molten Floor
  • Mirrored Deathmatch

I intend to try making one of these in the process of learning their system.

Sharing Games and Playing Other People's Games

People can also share their games that they have made in the Workshop.
To do this, they go play, then game browser, then create, then setting and then share, and click Copy to copy their code.
People can then use the code to get into games.

I have used other people's codes to get into games they made already. You simply enter the code for the game and then you can play it. You can also then adjust it for your game (i.e. it doesn't change the game connected to the code, just your current game) which I had to do with some so we (there were three of us) could play it deathmatch style instead of in teams we either didn't have enough people for, or could have played in teams but it would be two vs one.

The ones that I have played include an Avengers one that involves collecting infinity stones and holding onto them for long enough to win, but other people can kill you and get the stones from you and one where the characters are controlled as though they are helicopters.

To input codes to play other peoples' games, you go to play, then game browser, then create, then settings and then the import symbol and you enter the code and click OK.

You can see me entering a code in this screenshot below:

These articles list some fan made games you might want to try out:

In our experience playing it so far on the Public Test Region, the games were fun and the idea of custom games is very exciting, however we did also experience some lag and bugginess, but I assume this will only improve with time and should definitely be better once this hits the main game. The lag and bugginess was not so bad that I wouldn't recommend trying this out though. I will definitely be both trying to make games and checking out other people's games.

Conclusion

I think this is really exciting development for Overwatch.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed this post and I hope you are as excited as I am about this new aspect of Overwatch.
