Steemit Open Mic Week 59 - Drum Cover of Red Hot Chili Peppers - Dani CaliforniasteemCreated with Sketch.

in #openmic7 years ago (edited)

This is my first Steemit Open Mic Entry on my electronic drums done in a small window while my immediate neighbors were at work. It's not perfect, but the best I can do when quickly sneaking around overlapping neighbors' schedules!

I tried to do this a few times before, but one neighbor banged on my floor, and another knocked on my door. I'm not generating any drum sounds out loud, but the pedals and tapping on the pads do make noise.

I prefer an acoustic set of course, but that's not possible unless I pay for studio time and get recording equipment.

I've used a track that has the original drums suppressed so I can be heard clearly. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of drumless tracks out there, so my options are limited. I've never played this RHCP song before working on this cover, but it's pretty basic, and I knew it well enough from its amazing music video. If you haven't seen the music video, it's absolutely brilliant!

While this is technically a cover, I tried to open up a bit from the middle of the song onward since playing note for note isn't fun for me. There's a good fill around 2:45, so stick around!

PLEASE NOTE BEFORE LISTENING:

- To hear all of the components, and for the best sound quality, you'll need to listen with headphones or speakers that have good BASS! The sound is drastically different.

- Otherwise, you won't be able to hear ANY bass drum or bass via standard laptop speakers or cell phones, and it's key for hearing the kit as intended!

I was also pre-cleared that moving my Steemit Open Mic #59 sign is enough confirmation that it's me since I can't record my vocals during the recording process.

Hope you enjoyed!

All feedback is welcome so I can be better for the next entry.

I'll post some originals once my friend sends me some of his piano tracks.

Thanks to @luzcypher and @pfunk, and all judges and viewers, for giving me the motivation to dust this set off after a long time. Literally, lots of dust!

Yaaayyy you finally joined open mic!! Really awesome job, this was played to perfection. I just listened on my phone speakers, but I have some really good headphones at home. I’ll have to follow your suggestion and listen to it again later with those on. :-)

Also, I totally get the neighbor thing! On my electric keyboard and ukulele I can control the volume a bit, but this week I had to practice the flute when I didn’t think my neighbors were home. It’s not quite as loud as a drum set, but it sure isn’t very quiet either! Especially when practicing/making mistakes for a few hours. 😜

Again awesome job! I think you are really going to enjoy being part of that open mic community. Everyone is so supportive of each other!

Thank you very much. I've never uploaded a video to Youtube before, so it's a good first step. My old band has live band videos from gigs and MUSIC VIDEOS on there, but those will definitely stay hidden for now!

I'm a one trick pony though. I can't sing and definitely don't play anything other than percussion. I have a Yamaha NP-30 Portable Grand and a Roland JP-8000 Synthesizer from thrifting I've kept in hopes of learning, but I've barely touched my drumset enough as it stands. I had so much dust on it before this cover it was sad. NO more though.

Bad ass man, well done.

Way to sneak it in. Every musician's biggest challenge.... figuring out how to not piss off the neighbors!

Thanks a lot. I already owe one neighbor a beer and we've set up some parameters, but it's awkward with the other one. I even left them a note and offered to comply with whatever worked for them, and they completely ignored it.

Bravo! Thanks for the show. Loved every touch.

Thank you for the positive encouragement, @doctorjohn! Glad you caught my post and could appreciate it.

This is so good!! one of my favorite songs from RHCP!!
you so deserve my upvote... how long have you been playing for?

Have an awesome evening sir! <3

Thank you! It's a great song with such a funky backline.

I haven't played this set much, but I started playing the drums in 6th grade. I was very involved through college and then put the sticks down for about 6 years because I let someone influence me to give up on it.

In those 6 years, I played roughly 3 times total! I didn't realize how much it meant to me until I started playing after a random introduction to a guitar player in the subway who used to be signed by Capitol Records. His songs were great, but I had to play everything note for note his way, and that led to the end of that project.

Since then, I got involved with some jamming at studios, and then a band, and got to gig around my city and nearby states. My highlights were opening up for Hinder and Sponge, but now I'm back to just messing around in studios from time to time.

Well, am so glad that you are back at it!.
It is so sad to realize how much power we give people in our lives. We let them influence us and even change us or worse.. give up on ourselves for them... when we are all meant to be happy our own way!
You are super talented... and you love what you are doing... so. Please... never ever give up on it again! <3 no matter if it takes you far or not... you have to keep at it because you are good at it and passionate about it.

I for example... i am a songs writer ( not a good singer though) I love it so much I could mever ever give up... because music is my fuel.

Thank you very much for your genuine and very wise encouragement!

oh, any time! you so deserve all the support!

hey man! nice job! im a drummer too from buenos aires Argentina so you can check out my channel if you want to!!!

Thank you. Saw your posts and am following. Keep in touch.

Sounds awesome with headphones. Dude, you nailed it. Welcome to Open Mic and hope to hear more from you.

Thanks a lot for listening and the feedback. I'll happily contribute more now that I've broken the ice and have the process down. This might be the first time I've ever recorded myself playing a cover, so it's a new frontier to have fun with as long as I don't get an eviction notice.

that's great bro!!! very well! I'd vote XD

Thanks for listening. Welcome to Steemit.

Followed your recommendation and got my Sennheizer headphones out! Nice work on t he drums!

Thanks a lot. Living up to your name. Excellent choice of headphone gear.

So cool dude! All we need is a drummer for people who need a beat, ha!... I for one would love to see more drummers - this was awesome! Love me some Chillie's... :-)

Thanks.

Hah - yeah I'll be a drummer for hire on Steemit for SBD. Actually.... not a baddd idea!!
