Steemit Open Mic Songwriters Challenge - Week 3 - Stolen Soul

in #openmic8 years ago

Here we go again with another week of the fabulous Open Mic Songwriter's Challenge!

In case you haven't heard, Steemit #openmic is the biggest music community on Steemit. Check it out!

Thank you to @meno for generously offering a brand new guitar as the grand prize for this eight-week contest, and to @luzcypher for hosting.

Also, a huge thanks to the #openmic judges. It ain't easy... In fact, here's a hilarious song shared last week by the @steembirds called If I was a Judge.

I enlisted a little help this week recording my song. My beautiful wife @carrieallen helped with vocals and our good friend Tom was able to add in his guitar quite nicely. Here's Stolen Soul.

Lyrics

STOLEN SOUL
By Chris Roberts

(HIM)
I wound up at the Crossroads on a bleak and moonless night,
Looking to unload my heavy soul,
It’s widely known that in this lonely road devoid of light,
The devil waits for creatures to control.

With bated breath I stamped my leather boot onto the ground,
My baby thought that I was working late,
In sudden heat, his cloven feet approached without a sound.
The devil, come to bargain for my fate.

He stared me down, a crafty grin across his blistered face,
Just waiting for the human to speak first.
I figured he was buying so began to make my case,
Knowing that already I was cursed.

My job is tough, my life’s a wreck, I barely pay the bills,
I’d sell my soul for some security,
My baby’s sick of me; she don’t appreciate my skills,
So Mr. Devil, help me to be free.

(ALL)
Stolen Soul, Stolen soul…
Break me down, make me whole.

(HER)
He told me he was working late, but something in his voice
Betrayed his desperation and distress.
He needed me to rescue him; I didn’t have a choice,
I knew for me he wouldn’t do no less.

I grabbed the shotgun off the wall and ran into the night,
With slippers on and curlers in my hair,
For if I know that man of mine when he’s not feeling right,
He’d be better off if I were there.

I jumped into my pickup truck and tightly gripped the wheel,
The hounds of hell could not have held me back;
The stillness of the night was shattered by the chrome and steel
As my Chevrolet drove off into the black.

(ALL)
Stolen Soul, Stolen soul...
Break me down, Make me whole.

(HIM)
I asked the devil to just name the price that he would pay
To leave this crossroads with my soul in tow.
The devil leaned in closer and was then repelled away,
As if he knew some thing I didn’t know.

The devil glared right back at me, no longer looking smug,
You lucky fool, you’ve got no soul to give.
Just remember, sonny boy that love is like a drug;
The more you find, the more you need to live.

Just as he was backing off in casual defeat;
If there’s one thing he respects, it’s owners’ rights,
My baby in her pickup truck came tearing down the street,
Staring down the devil with her brights.

She looked just like an angel of vengeance, wrath and rage
As she ran down the devil at high speed.
That woman may have stole my soul and put it in a cage
But she knows what I like and what I need.

(ALL)
Stolen Soul, Stolen soul...
Break me down, Make me whole.

Check out my #openmic entry from week 62! A little song I wrote called "Blues Man with a Ukulele." Thanks for stopping by!

I freaking love it Chris... you guys killed it dead twice... you are one talented man brother, don't let anyone ever tell you otherwise (i read your other post)

This was just awesome!

Thanks, @meno! This song was tons of fun to work on.

I'm psyched that I got my entry in early this week. I'm overdue for some wordy blog posts ;)

Well.... you guys pretty much killed it.

Loved the lyrics and harmonies over the verse was a nice touch.

Guess you found some good inspiration in this one lol.

Very pleasantly surprised my man.

Thanks! This one felt pretty good.

As far as the inspiration, I love this type of story. Faustian tales - they've always fascinated me. I actually wrote one a couple months ago for a contest, called "The Devil and Drake LaFoe." I wrote most of this song within a few minutes of reading the topic. Finishing it was a bit trickier though.

Thanks for your support! This songwriting-on-demand stuff is hard work (for me).

Thanks you guys for that treat.

You're very welcome! Thought you might like that, Mr. devil emoji ;)

These kind of stories are my absolute favorite to write. Devil And stories, I call them. So I got pretty excited when I heard the topic this time; the wheels started spinning right away. Although I may have gone a little overboard, or set the bar a little high for future weeks...

I'm really having a blast with this. And I keep finding that the more I write, the more I write. :)

Wow...just wow! The song, the presentation, the story, its all there, while listening I envisioned a black and white vintage music video with the two of you acting out the story. It was amazing. When are you shooting the scenes?

Lol! We were going to make it more movie-like, but there's a bit of a time constraint cause of the competition. He literally wrote it, and sang it through for us and then we started working it. I think it's a great story! And he' pretty proud of it too. 😍

OMG you're right. This would be super fun as a music video. We may get to that. :)

Thanks so much for your support!

Love it... It made me jiggle :) Great lyrics, give us more of this...

Thanks! More to come for sure... Still five weeks to go in the songwriter's Challenge. Appreciate your support!
