Yesterday I took an old friend on a boat trip along Chao Phrya River.

It's my way to say ‘thank you’ for her kindness and friendship towards me during my college years in England.

We haven't met for many years, each drifted along each own destiny and career path. We met a few times in Bangkok after I came back from my study, then we were both very busy with our lives and family businesses. I ran into my old friend in a coffee shop at the Emporium. At first I couldn't recognise her at all, we used to see each other in casual clothes with carefree style. Now, my friend has become very matured with very conservative clothing style, very proper for officer personel. It has been quite a challenge trying to connect up with people who I haven't seen for more than ten years. People often got attached to their old concepts and knowledge about friends they use to know so it can be quite shocking to find out that some people do change in leaps and bounds.

So, to make up for my shocking her with my frank opinions on many subjects from politics to religion, I see the need to bridge the gap by showing her how to enjoy life and free her mind from social pressures and norms. Most Thai people are expected to follow the social norms and values of 'face-saving' and 'never to confront people with the truth or their real opinions'. The result has been a growing bad habit of gossipping and back stapping including character assisination. I could see that she is full of insecurity and weakness in her mind. Because of her weakness, some cunning people have managed to swindle quite a bit of money from her. She fell pray to several psychological projects of 'life coach' and 'spiritual jumping'. These are very expensive courses for people with low self-confidence and self-esteem to join for moral support, psycholigcal therapy and massages to pump up their battered egos. There are so many fake gurus and experts to make big bucks from the feeling of insecurity and loneliness of fellow human beings.

My plan was to gently make her feel her own self-confidence by leading her to investigate spirituality from Buddhist perspective. Most people here are not real Buddhists, they are traditional Buddhists who follow customs and rituals witout reading any Buddhist texts or doing serious meditation on a regular basis. They normally follow the act of giving alms, food and money to the monks and Buddhist temples. I would say most people are part-time Buddhists as they don't normally vow to upkeep the five precepts and they do not practice mindfulness which is the basis of Buddhism.

Well, the Buddha said that Buddhism will disappear in five thousnad years after his death. Now we are in the middle of the epoch, the Thai calendar year is 2561 B.E. Most learned Buddhist scholars know that this is the beginning of the decline of Buddhism. But at the same time these past few years have been the golden period of extra energy for those who want to have tremendous progress in their spiritual development, it's the highest posiition of the curve in this cycle before it started to decline. The window of opportunity has been closed; it sounds a bit like the conjunction of earth to the galacitc center which let out lots of energy a few years ago. Some even think that there would be a great flood on earth to wipe everything clean for a thousand year from now Then, a new epoch would arise after the global flood.

It's difficult to try to educate my old friend who used to be very kind and nice to me when I was a young student college. She is more of an artistice type with lots of emotions and self-indulgence whereas I am highly intellectual with scientific method drilled into my brain during my college years. Luckily, my interest in Buddhism had led me to learn wisdom from several schools of Buddhism and experimented with at least five methods of meditation. So, I could be intellectually critical while being very intuitive and psychic at the same time.

I just hope that the river trip to Nonthaburi, the adjacent province to Bangkok, would tell my friend that I appreciated her frienship and kindness even though I had to disagree with her on many subjects. I never try to please friends by saying what they want to hear, so I do not go out my way to save people's faces when the truth has to be spoken. Sometimes I have to be silent and just walk away from the friendship as it has no real communication any longer.

We went on the boat in late afternoon but the sun was still very strong. The day was bright and the air was fresh and clean on the river. The views aon bithe sides of the river tell us that Bangkok and Nontaburi are changing very fast whether we like it or not. People's lives have been affected by new shopping malls along the riverside. So many slums of shacks and housed without legal deeds have been taken over by big development projects with high rise condominiums and luxurious hotels. Only the rich can afford to live by the river.

This was the first time my friend has a proper boat trip to Nonthaburi where we had a good time walking around the street shopping area for some local food and Thai desserts to take home. This is simple day out on a low budget with the grounding energy of water and the sky. By the time we got back to the pier, the sky was getting dark and thick clouds were coming over from the other side. The evening lights and reflections on the river were beautiful and maginal for me. Outside the peir, there was a lonely busker singing an old Beatles' song, Hey jude. My ole friend just could not resist singing along and I encourged her to sing with the younfg busker. Passer-bys and Chinese tourists started to sing along as well. The rain storm broke out with loud thunder sounds while we were having our Japanese dinner. The boat trip has been a success and my friend said she would try to reflect on the direction of her life and build up inner strength by herself.

เมื่อวานนี้เราได้มีโอกาสพาเพื่อนเก่า ที่ไม่ได้พบกันมานานกเกือบสิบปี ไปนั่งเรือด่วนเที่ยวกัน เพื่อเป็นการแสดงการขอบคุณและทำให้เขารู้ว่า เราระลึกถึงความใจดีมีเมตตาต่อเราตั้งแต่สมัยที่เราเป็นนักเรียนที่เมืองนอก เขาก็เคยเลี้ยงดูและทำอาหารให้กินสมัยก่อนโน้น เรามาเจอกับเพื่อนรุ่นพี่โดยบังเอิญที่ร้านกาแฟหรูแห่งหนึ่ง เราเคยเจอเขาตอนแรกเมื่อตอนที่กลับมาใหม่ๆ มาเจอกันครั้งนี้เราแทบจะจำกันไม่ได้ เพราะต่างคนก็ต่างเปลี่ยนไปมาก เขาก็แต่งตัวเป็นผู้ใหญ่สมฐานะและดูภูมิฐาน สมัยก่อนแต่ละคนแต่งตัวเหมือนฝรั่งไปเรียนหนังสือ การมาพบกันครั้งนี้ทำให้เข้าใจหลักของความเป็นอนิจจังมากขึ้น ร่างกายก็เปลี่ยนไป และความคิดเราก็เปลี่ยนไปมาก เลยทำให้เพื่อนค่อนข้างตกใจ ว่าที่เขาคิดนั้นอยู่บนพื้นฐานของข้อมูลที่คลาดเคลื่อน โดยเราสามารถให้ข้อมูลและ แหล่งที่มาของข้อเท็จจริงได้ด้วย

เราไม่ค่อยจะทำตามค่านิยมทั่วไป ของการรักษาหน้า และการไม่พูดเผชิญหน้าด้วยความจริง ซึ่งเป็นหลักการในสังคมไทยที่ก่อเกิดขึ้นหล้งความเสื่อมโทรมของศาสนาจักร ทำให้คนในสังคมไม่กล้าพูดความจริงต่อหน้า แต่กลับไปนินทากล่าวร้ายลับหลัง โดยปราศจากการทดสอบความน่าเชื่อถือของข้อมูล ทำให้เป็นการแทงคนข้างหลังและการทำลายชื่อเสียงของผู้ถูกกล่าวโทษโดยศาลเตี้ย ซึ่งผิดหลักการของศีลห้าอย่างแน่นอน เราจึงมองว่าสมัยนี้คนส่วนใหญ่เป็นพุทธแบบบางเวลา คือมีการทำตามจารึตและพิธีกรรมที่ทำสืบทอดกันมา การทำบุญทำทาน การไปวัดและทำสังฆทาน แต่จะหาคนที่สมาทานศีลห้า และรักษาศีลห้าอย่างจริงจังแทบจะหาไม่ได้เลย ปัจจุบันคนไม่ชอบค้นคว้าหาความรู้ทางพุทธศาสนากันเลย ขนาดบทสวดมนต์บาลีก็อ่านกันไม่ออกและไม่เข้าใจความหมายด้วย โชคดีที่เราเคยศึกษาและอ่านหนังสือด้านนี้มาตั้งแต่สมัยเรียน และได้ไปศึกษาการทำสมาธิของหลายสำนัก ทำให้เข้าใจอะไรได้เร็วกว่าคนทั่วไป

เพื่อนเรากำลังแสวงหาความมั่นคงทางจิตใจ แต่คนอ่อนแอก็มักเป็นเหยื่อของคนที่ใช้วาจาและจิตวิทยา เป็นการหาประโยชน์จากคนอื่น เพื่อนเราถูกชักชวนให้มีศรัทธาในคนที่สอนให้มีการพัฒนาทางจิตวิญญาณ และความเชื่อมั่นในตนเอง ตอนนี้มีโปรแกรมสอนเรื่องชีวิต และ การพัฒนาแบบก้าวกระโดดทางสมาธิหลายรายการ ทำให้เห็นเลยว่าคนสมัยนี้เจริญทางวัตถุแต่อ่อนแอเรื่องจิตวิญญาณ เลยต้องมีพี่เลี้ยงและโคชคอยบอกให้เชื่ออย่างนี้อย่างนั้น ให้มีความเชื่อมั่นในผู้สอน และมีการจ่ายเงินคราวละมากๆสำหรับโปรแกรมขั้นสูงขึ้นไปอีก การตั้งคำถามตามหลักกาลามสูตรนั้นแทบจะไม่มีใครเข้าใจกันเท่าไร ซึ่งเป็นหลักการคืดที่คล้ายกับการคิดเชิงวิทยาศาสตร์ แต่คนเราทั่วไปจะเอาความเชื่อเป็นที่ตั้งและปกป้องความเชื่อเหนือสิ่งอื่นๆ

เรากำลังพยายามไม่ให้เพื่อนถูกหลอกให้เสียทรัพย์ไปมากกว่านี้ โดยการสอนให้รู้จักอยู่กับตนเองและความเป็นจริง จะได้ไม่ต้องไปพึ่งพลังใจจากคนที่ทำมาหากินกับคำพูด โปรไพร์และการโฆษณาโน้มน้าวทางจิตวิทยาของเหล่ากูรูปลอมนี้ มีความสร้างสรรค์มาก ทำให้คนที่ตามไม่ทันต้องทึ่งในความเก่งความดี และความเสียสละตนเพื่อส่วนรวมและมนุษยชาติ คนก็พร้อมที่จะจ่ายเงินเพราะมีความเชื่อมั่นและมีศรัทธา อันแรงกล้า และพร้อมที่จะจัดการกับคนที่มาตั้งข้อสงสัยในคนที่เขาเคารพรัก แต่ลืมถามตนเองว่าการกระทำนั้นสอดคล้องกับหลักการของพระธรรมคำสั่งสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าหรือไม่ การกระทำเป็นไปตามหลักการของศีลห้าหรือไม่ ตอนนี้เพื่อนของเราเลยได้การบ้านไปขบคิดอีกมากมาย เขาควรจะคิดได้ว่าคนดีต้องไม่ทำบาปหรือละเมิดศีลห้านั่นเอง
