Student stress and weight gain

in #nutrition7 years ago (edited)

Students in college and university are stressed, there's no doubt about it. Exam and social pressures, commitments to sports or work can all contribute to stress and anxiety.

Previous studies have shown that high levels of stress and anxiety can influence body fat. But are they connected in students?

A systematic review (comparing results from 25 studies) found that there was no association between body mass index (BMI) and;

  • stress in 11 of the studies.
  • anxiety in 5 studies.

However, other studies showed that there were links with body weight in their sample populations.

Inconclusive results from systematic reviews like this are common and often require more research to get a better overall picture of the association.

Have you seen the movie "Fed Up"? It's a great documentary that talks about childhood obesity and the food in schools. You might want to check it out, you would probably enjoy it. Thanks for the great post!!

Hey Mike, yeah I have seen it but couldn't hurt rewatching it sometime soon.
