"To Kill A Runner" Chapter 23 "Love Under Surveillance" Cyberpunk Fiction (Final Chapter)
Megana ran up first on the cracked broken street corner, gray pavement gritty with salt and mud. Covering herself with a forest green canvas trench coat and ripped clothes underneath. Jarome and Britney fallow up behind guns drawn but cautiously pointed down to the ground. Thinking the danger of Lone Star and the ghoulish vampire creatures from the tunnels was gone the three runners tucked away their guns into the duffle bag then with all the guns in one bag Jarome tossed the bag off the overpass and into a rushing choppy Pittsburgh river. Then they made their way off the bridge and into an inner city commercial district in a quick jogging pace.
“ We need to get rid of these guns before we get tied to them “ Jarome said “Stay low for a while”
The team made their way down an allay buildings shadowing the sun in the sky, Light not allowed to reach the sprawling maze of the streets. Britney uses her digitized L.E.D screen implanted into her prosthetic to map out their location and send a call for a robotic taxi service to that location. Megana let her coat fall around her shoulders as they began to sit and rest on a street corner. Taking out two eagle feathers from her hair and gave one to both Jarome and Britney.
“I thank you two for all your help but I need to look for the organization of the Vampires in this city, I cannot let an abomination of magic them exist but I need to recruit more help. I will be in touch through matrix mail Britney” Megana stood up and buzzed her phone to connect with cybernetic arm of Britney.
“Are you sure you want to do this. We can get a hotel room and stay there for a while. Settle down and try to stay safe.” Jarome spoke trying to compel her to stay in solidarity with them.
“I will be there in a few nights” Megana replied reassuringly “send me the address.” and then she made strides down the street in the hazy sunlight.
Not to long a robo-taxi came and they dashed away into it, away to a dark part of the city to a cheep and seedy motel. Jarome and Britney had a deep understanding and love for each other and protecting each other took priority over going after the next target. Being dropped off out front of a hotel they embraced and made the vow to make both of their lives better.
The next run would be the last big score and then they would get out, not any petty stuff. Hitting a mega-corp and getting a good payout would let them drop off the grid for a while. Britney confirmed the payment on her electronic display across her forearm.
Walking down the hallway and using a plastic card to open an electronic locks Jarome sparked up a cigarette and finally was able to unlace his combat boots. Dropping the cigarette and stepping it into the carpet when Britney embraced him crying like a soldier with post-traumatic stress and finally able to let out emotion, her real organic arm the only one radiating warmth while her steel electronic and fiberglass arm was cold and strange. Drifting off huddled together in their clothes they slept all through the day to wake up and live to run again.
