No Time For This #3 [ger/eng]

Some interesting (fun)facts I don’t have time to produce a dedicated post for. In two languages.

English readers have to scroll down.

Sorry. Das war so klar. Dafür hab ich echt keine Zeit.

Over and out.

English: Facts and stories I don’t have time for:

"Rosemary helps with anxiety, poor sleep and depression."

...says the "Standard", a (self-proclaimed) quality newspaper. Great shit, why do we need the pharmaceutical industry again? The newspaper found this in an Indian article recently published in the journal "Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice". This has an impact factor of 1.7 and...
WTF, are you kidding me? I haven't published a single article below IF 3 and never made it to the headlines. If I suggest a 1.7 journal, the boss fires me. A human study that cannot be published above 1.7? There'll be reasons, I'll tell you...
I could now search the study, list all the weaknesses, pick it apart and spend a day with "Standard"-bashing... but I really don't have time for this!

There are also other newspapers...

Do mosquitos sting some people more often than others?

...asks "Die Presse" (the Austrian quality newspaper from the other side of the isle). The answer: Yes, and it's all about the smell!

Science in the 21st century. Who would have thought that?
My wife, for example, has known this for a long time. Every night I get trouble cuz I didn't close the windows... again. But, honey, can't you see?
I really don't have time for this!

I have to keep researching!

The Comet Assay is done, and I am enjoying the daylight again. But after the assay is before the assay. Next in line is an old enemy: the ICE assay. Holy Crap!
Right now, I prefer doing statistics. Does anyone of you know how to calculate a two-way ANOVA properly? That would be really nice and would save me the time to browse through the tutorials I don't have time for!

Because the boss told me to:

"research on processes that play a role in the transactivation of estrogen receptors."

No problem, there are only 100,000 molecular biological papers to comb through!
But it is an intriguing target, this ER, I have to admit. Up to now, more than 20 different phosphorylation sites are known at the protein, and for most of them we are absolutely not sure what this means for the activity of the receptor.Ref And the interaction with other receptors! For example, an activated Ah receptor reduces the estrogenic response.Ref The field is highly complex and highly interesting and worth 10 more posts in the xenoestrogen series, which has been lying still for far too long anyway! But sadly, I don't have time for this!

Speaking of time.

I just realized that I have started the 7-day wayback music challenge once. I've come to day 2. That was over two months ago. Sorry. That was so clear. Cuz I really don't have time for this!

Over and out.

Sort:

Voll. Für uns klingt Gelsenkirchen auch lustig genug. ;-)

Adding to fun fact about mosquitoes being attracted to certain body odors. Some of those odors are molecules produced by bacteria on skin for quorum sensing. Mosquitoes seem to eavesdrop on communication between bacterial community. It seems they tend to prefer some communities over other. The abundance of some species of bacteria on our skin vs other can make us more attractive to these tiny vampires.

PS: Found that study it was published in plos one in 2015

cool stuff ;-)

Danke.

Stimmt prinzipiell... Aber die Zeit...

If I suggest a 1.7 journal, the boss fires me.

Wait, you can actually get fired in academia?

I just realized that I have started the 7-day wayback music challenge once.

FCUK!!! You just reminded me that I was nominated and have never even bothered to start it...

Wait, you can actually get fired in academia?

In theory.^^
