Confirmed, Steemit was Down Caused By DDOS Attack. How Could It Happen?
A Twitter Account, named KLYE (@M_R_KLYE ) reported that the disturbance experienced by the website steemit.com a while ago caused by hacker attacks, using DDOS.
DDoS Attacks ( Distributed Denial of Service attacks ) is a type of attack on a computer or server on an internet network by spending resources (resources) owned by the computer, until the computer can not perform its function properly, so as not directly prevents other users from accessing services from the attacked computer. -Wikipedia.
KLYE confirms the issue through a reply tweet, when he responds to a tweet from the official steemit account, which contains the stating that the steemit.com site is down.

Confirming that outage was caused by a DDOS attack. Steemit Inc is mitigating the attack and spooling up the web front end as I type this.
Until this article was release, we don't known for sure whether KLYE is an official IT staff of steemit, in charge of securing the network or not. But one thing is certain, that the tweet reply from KLYE is also retweeted again by Steemit. Besides that, he (@KLYE) was also recorded as a steemian and witness in steemit.com.
For note, Currently steemit.com site is already normal again and has started to be accessible by its users.
The users certainly expect a lot for the Steemit IT Team can patch this security bugs, so that the similar things do not happen again in the future and gonna be safe. Thus, the trust of users and investors is well preserved.

I'm not a Steemit Inc employee. However I am a top 20 witness and was informed of the DDOS happening from a Steemit Inc staff member.
The web servers used to serve Steemit.com can be attacked via DDOS as they've got static IP addresses I believe. The developers of Steemit are working on the issue and will be doing some work to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future by the sounds of it.
