I'm not a Steemit Inc employee. However I am a top 20 witness and was informed of the DDOS happening from a Steemit Inc staff member.
The web servers used to serve Steemit.com can be attacked via DDOS as they've got static IP addresses I believe. The developers of Steemit are working on the issue and will be doing some work to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future by the sounds of it.
