What's In A Crocheter's Travel Bag?
I'm travelling on this #needleworkmonday , which means my Crochet project is travelling with me.
Since I normally don't trust the airlines 100%, all valuables go with me in my hand luggage. And guess what, my unfinished crochet dress is one of the most important valuables at this stage...
...so here's how my hand luggage looks like... my unfinished crochet dress is taking up half of my suitcase!
I thought I just couldn't bear the pain if the airlines misplaced my main luggage with the dress in it, after all, I've been working on it for the past two years...
And speaking of the dress itself, you may remember that I am making this dress in Irish Crochet technique, which means that each decor element is crocheted separately and then assembled together by crocheting lace in between the elements.
I'm now at the stage where I've finished all the separate elements and will start assembling the whole thing after I reach my destination.
So here are the elements I had to crochet for this dress:
14 rosebuds on stems.
I started with these rosebuds, which was a mistake since at that stage I wasn't very skilled in this crochet technique. People were telling me they looked more like snails than rosebuds. So I stopped and came back to them after crocheting a number of other elements.
70 background roses.
These will be used to fill in spaces between the main picture, so they won't be immediately noticeable.
16 medium sized roses.
6 open roses.
I think these are the least successfully fulfilled elements. Somehow the master's roses in the instructions I bought are so much more precise. But I didn't go re-crocheting them since when I laid them out with other elements the overall picture looked fine.
1 main rose.
I showed you the process of making this rose HERE
45 green leaves of various sizes and colour variations.
Again, these did not come out as perfectly as I would have wanted, but then I thought that not every leaf in nature is perfectly symmetrical and identical, so again, I didn't obsess over the imperfections too much...
30 brighter leaves.
100 background leaves.
Similarly to background roses, these will be used as 'fillers'.
30 little 'buttons'.
These are one of the basic elements of Irish crochet technique. As I was crocheting them, I thought they can easily be used to liven up a piece of clothing or even summer shoes.
8 little flowers.
27 scrolls.
15 little 'bushes'.
Again these will serve as a different type of space fillers.
40 cords.
29 stems and branches of various lengths.
So here I am at the final (and most likely most complicated) step of my project - assembling the dress and making sure it looks right. :D
It feels a bit daunting, but I keep reminding myself that every single element I made seemed daunting at first...

That's going to be marvellous @vliet... It would be a bit funny if your case got searched though :D
:DDD but thankfully it didn't get searched...
I had to laugh.... :-D
Wow wow wow @vliet! You have done a lot of work!! Such intricacy and detailed crocheting and so many different pieces and each are so beautiful!! I can't wait to see the dress :) Happy travels!
Thanks @marbely !
I just hope the dress will turn out all right... :D
I'm overwhelmed with all the pretties and all the time you must have invested. I'm so looking forward to seeing your dress!
Thanks @muscara ! Now the pressure is on to really deliver on the final step... ;)
I've been watching this for such a long time - it must feel part of you now, I completely understand that it has to travel with you! The next stage is going to be so exciting ...
Yes @shanibeer , it's a strange thought that a finishing line is in sight... this dress certainly has become such an integral part of my life, can't imagine my evenings without it.
To be honest, I am dreading the next stage, but there's nowhere to go, only forward :D
Wowsers! First I didn’t realize you’ve been working on this for two years then I didn’t realize all of the separate different elements you had to make for this dress. I am so very impressed...you have done excellent work and I am soooo ready to see you put it all together...Wow!! ❤️
The open roses and brighter leaves are my favorites!!! 😊
I surely don’t blame you for taking extra precaution with something so precious and dear to you. You’ve worked hard on it so keep it close! ☺️
Thank you so much @crocheille !
Yes, it's been a labour of love, I only hope it'll turn out right...
Thankfully, nothing got lost in the airport, so I am planning the next step :D
I sure hope so too! I have high hopes for it ;D
I shared about your mug in a post a few days ago so hopefully others will visit your site soon!! 😉😘

I really like your crazy luggage. Airport stuff will be smiling if they ask you to open it :D And I'm curious how your dress turns out.
Thanks @akipponn ! Thankfully no-one asked to open the luggage, so no explanation was needed :D
I hope the dress will turn out fine, it's my first attempt ever... no pressure...
Your work is so amazing, I had to resteem it. All the beautiful details... I cannot imagine to work so hard on one dress. (As you perhaps know by now, I only make big fat sweaters :-DDD) I would protect this suitcase like a bag full of diamonds... this is a real treasure you created. I am still in love with the soft pink and green hues and I am so excited to see it finished someday <3
Thanks @neumannsalva !
I honestly don't know what came over me, when I chose to make this dress. I had never made such fine crochet work before and hadn't crocheted at that stage for a very VERY long time...
but, like you, when I saw those hues of soft pink and green, I just fell in love...
I blame the internet... :D
I’m with @neumannsalva - I would protect this dress like diamonds for sure! My goodness! With so much gorgeousness done over the past two years, I cannot wait to see the final result! Incredible job! 😊
Thanks @mrscwin !
Yes, I am really protective of these little flowers, leaves and the rest, wouldn't trust anyone with them :DDD
I really hope the final result won't disappoint!
