The Crested Pigeon

in #nature7 years ago

These are Crested Pigeons (Ocyphaps lophotes). This was originally a bird of the drier inland areas but it has taken advantage of the land changes brought about by European settlement. Over the last 30 years or so it has become common even in the coastal cities of Sydney and Melbourne. Personally, I first saw these birds at Jerry's Plains near Singleton, New South Wales, way back in 1975. It was not until 1984 that I saw one in the Sydney area. Unfortunately it was pounced upon by a cat just seconds after I spotted it. They have not yet reached Tasmania. These shots were taken over on the mainland.

I wish our pigeons in the USA looked this good. Great video!

Thanks. Yes they're pretty cool looking birds for pigeons :-)

Very pretty ones! They feather in the wings shine with so many colours :)
Do they behave like "normal" pigeons and stay in the cities?

Yep. Prettu much like normal pigeons and they seem to thrive in suburban parks gardens. (not in the CBD)

Cool! First time I see a pigeon like that :)
