New Holland Honeyeater

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

This is the New Holland Honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae). They are primarily nectar feeders but also eat insects. In the photos below, it is feeding from Kangaroo Paw flowers. In the video it is feeding on Stringybark flowers (Eucalyptis ovata). These were taken in my backyard hare in Tasmania.

That is a very cool bird, I can't believe you have them in your backyard!

Beautiful birdie! And he looks so nice with those red flowers around.
He is feeding on the eucalyptus flowers on the video?

(Lovely bokeh on the first photo!)

Thanks. Not eating the flowers but feeding on the nectar. The end of their tongue is like a little brush that soaks up the nectar.

Nice! Amazing to have them in the backyard... though for you it might be a normal thing.

Very beautiful. Upvote.greets

Thank you for visiting.

Wow, great shots, what a fine bird to have in your backyard.

Thanks. This is a common bird in my backyard but not an easy one to approach ☺

WHat a beautiful little bird. Beautiful pictures actually...except the spider. Not a spider fan hihi. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks. Sorry about the spider. Should have put a warning somewhere 😀

Hihi it's ok. It's just on screen I can live with that. If it was in real life.....I would be the roadrunner :p

Great photos - what's your photo setup?

Thank you. These were taken with the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens.

Such a beautiful bird and great shots :)

Thanks very much.
