A Tiny, but Rather Beautiful, Fly (Five Macro Photos)
These tiny flies were found in my backyard over the last week or so. They appear to be Trigonospila sp. There are several very similar species so I cannot be more precise than that. It's quite a small fly at around 6 or 7mm, however, when seen in detail it is really quite a stunning looking insect.
Trigonospila is part of the Tachinidae family which are parasitic. For example, T. cingulata parasitises Leaf beetle larvae and T. brevifacies parisites various caterpillars.
These photos were taken with a Canon 7D and Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro lens.
