The Helena Gum Moth (Four Macro Shots)
A couple of nights ago I saw my first Helena Gum Moth (Opodiphthera helena) for the spring. It came to the light of my moth trap and was quite obliging in allowing me take a few photographs. These large moths, of the Saturniidae family, have a wingspans of up to 17cm (About 6.7 inches).

When disturbed they stretch their wings out revealing the large eye spots on the hind wings.

For those with mottephobia, there is nothing scary about this moth. It's just like a big fluffy butterfly :-)

Here it is on the back of my hand
Lovely!
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
So furry!
Yes. It could probably use a comb :-)
Excellent shots. Amazing creature.. reminds me lil bit of a gremlin :D
A gremlin was my first thought too! Are those antennas shaped like leaves? Very delicately designed mini beast. Love it :)
Those are in fact leaves but I can see why you would think that. When I looked at the photo on the computer I had to laugh at the way they are positioned like antennae.
Thanks. Yes furry little things aren't they.
WOW .....
Thanks for looking.
Michelin legs! :D
For those with mottephobia, there is nothing scary about this moth. It's just like a big fluffy butterfly - who said butterflies are not scary?
True, however, I was only addressing those with mottephobia, not those with lepidopterophobia :-)
Yes he's a bit like the Mitchelin man insn't he :-)
He is :)
And probably one of the prettiest (still don't want it flying near me) moths.
What a fat, fat, and furry moth! That top image is spectacular! Even his legs are furry, lol. THose antenna are pretty spectacular, too. THey must be picking up some faint pheremone signals. Moths are so fascinating!
Yes it's a cool looking moths. Males in this family can detect female pheromones from a mile away. Pretty amazing!
