A Rather Showy Geometrid Moth

in #nature8 years ago (edited)

The first photo shows a rather beautiful moth that had come to my moth light overnight. It is one of the Geometids is known asNiceteria macrocosma. The species can be found right down the eastern side of Australia and Tasmania. It's a reasonably large moth. I've had some with a wing span over 60mm. I could not find any commonly used English name for this moth although at least one web site refers to it as the Showy Geometrid. The name certainly suits it.

Unfortunately, as soon as I took this shot, the moth flew of into the great blue yonder showing a flash of brilliant yellow as it did so.

The flash of colour, which I referred to above, is from the underwings Fortunately I have some older photos of this species where you can see it with it's wings open.
