A Flower Wasp (Tachynomyia abdominalis)
The wasp in the photos below is known as a Flower wasp (Family Tiphiidae). More specifically, I believe this one is Tachynomyia abdominalis . While adults of the Tiphiidae family feed on flower nectar, they are also parasitoids, with their larvae feeding on various beetles (usually scarab beetles). This one was resting on the leaf of a Canna lilly in the backyard.
