Here's Why People Who Deny Global Warming Are Missing The Whole Point!

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Sometimes i get really frustrated when I watch powerful individuals debunk Global Warming and use that as an excuse to carry on promoting and using things like fossil fuels. The reason I get frustrated isnt because I'm 100% certain that they are wrong! I've been involved with Climate Change and Carbon Footprinting since 2001 and I also have a solid scientific background in Biology. I can say that it may be possible, at least in theory, that Global Warming is the result of other natural factors that happen in long cycles. We may just be adding to that but may not be the cause..

Now, no body can 100% prove that point one way or another!

BUT

What we can say 100% are several very important key things that every denier seems to totally ignore.

The first issue is that many people (especially Climate Change Deniers) focus too much on carbon dioxide and the term 'Global Warming'  when considering use of Coal and other fuels. The bigger issue to me are things like air pollution and millions of premature deaths in many of the most developed cities in the world.

So here's the real story that everyone just seems to ignore!  Whilst people are debating and denying  whether or not  Climate Change is linked to Human activities, they are missing the real issues! The real issues are actually quite varied, but one major issue is that more people die of respiratory disease in the world than from terrorist attacks.  A lot more. Smog and pollution is a serious problem, and there is a pretty long list of other effects of smog on nature and wildlife too! if I asked you to guess how many people worldwide die from air pollution I wonder what you would say. Whilst this is a very hard number to accurately estimate, it is widely accepted now that up to .. wait for it .... 5.5 MILLION deaths* worldwide occur per year due to air pollution!!! And people are still stuck debating CO2??? Something very strange going on here!

We have to realize that is is inevitable that sooner or later fossil fuels will run out.. If we look at the state of the Climate today and take heed of the many and varied  warnings we are receiving; there is not much to deny! We can't keep growing and consuming exponentially whilst we're on the same planet! Ask any bacteria and it will confirm this!.. At some point you just run out everything and its all gets very messy and nasty! We have to change the way we do things. The good news  is that the alternatives are already out there, and there are even MANY options!

Our planet could easily sustain a population much greater than it is right now,  but only when we start thinking and acting smart. Have you noticed how when you fly that most of the world looks totally empty! There is plenty of space, we just have to figure out how to use it properly.  We know how to do things quite well when we try! There are many people setting this example and working hard to start new trends.

When we work in harmony with our environment,  everything we do works to support it and as a by product of our actions. This happens automatically when we do things properly! When we do thing Sustainably, we no longer have to keep compensating for our actions. Instead our actions are already supportive and in multiple ways.  Therefore the more we do, the better everything gets. That is the ethos of sustainability. It reminds me of Steemit actually! Centralized anything is just not a good idea! That definitely applies to power generation!

It's high time we start discussing the real issues in the mainstream media.. Even today no-one even is even yet asking the right questions!

If this post gave you an insight that you didn't know before, PLEASE re-steem! I think people need to understand the issues so much better and there is not nearly enough dialogue about it.

Thank you for talking about this. We need more like you to stand up and question the mainstream focus, which is seriously screwed up.

I think we really need to get away from the tendency to call serious critics of certain climate "change" theories outright "deniers" though. Using these smear terms only intensifies the divide, which is not currently between truth and falsity, but between two sides that tend to show an extreme bias that is not conductive to science.

I agree with you that climate "change" sceptics tend to ignore some independent and factual issues with polution. Myself I'm not entirely convinced by the current narrative supported by politicians and the public, but nonetheless I'm part of a cooperative-agorist movement that work to improve on society no matter what.

Polution is a problem with the most used energy sources we have today. This doesn't mean that we can automatically just switch over from the more polluting to all renewable and non-poluting, because we have to consider current economic factors. But a scenario with less polution would be ideal.

I also of course consider voluntary solutions to be far superior, not only in terms of protecting natural resources and industrial efficiency (which they tend to be), but ethically. Thankfully even several proponents of the narrative of climate change have agreed that the current move towards green energy is much more so driven by culture than by politics and we are now starting to see even some decentralized projects happening within the blockchain sector.

Great response. Thank you. And yes, nice point.. i didnt really consider that the term Climate Change Denier is actually not very clean!

Thank you. I mean it's incredibly hard not to get sucked into the current trends in use of language. These terms spread fast when the majority just soaks up whatever terms the media centers use and it takes time for sensible people to actually consider whether they are good or not.

The divide over climate change tend to be similar to the Trump divide, in so far as both sides contains so much madness they can motivate the other side for decades. I think if I hadn't come from a far left ideological stand point and made a very challenging transition to be extremely pro-capitalist (not the fascist right), then I would've never questioned the term, but thanks to this experience I tend to be very analytical and many times sceptical when new "facts" or terms get introduced by respected influencers.

(That's not to suggest that I don't make mistakes of course. I make a ton of them. But a lot of people never go back to correct their mistakes, because they trust that their high intelligence is given by their luck of growing up and merely existing in an enviroment with the right principles.)

personally i find climate change to be one topic we can't just be dismissive of and really who wants to be wrong on this one? regardless what you believe about climate change consider the reporting on storms, weather patterns, places that it's never happened before, rising sea levels, acidification of oceans, the list goes on. why would anyone be on the side of apathy using 'it's made up as a choice thought? - i might be on the fence with my opinions about a lot of things, i feel the GAMBLE on one to do with the very climate we need for the human race is not one i want to play the 'told you so' game on because nobody wins --- we need to optimize what we have left. i'm afraid until their is no food on the shelves in the masses that we have now people won't take notice. we need massive behaviour change for people to care about the world they transition through. just my two cents.. .

Yes I agree, its a very good idea to not sqander limited resources, when we have options available to us to use renewable resources instead, I posted something similar the other week https://steemit.com/solar/@scalextrix/getting-solar-panels-on-your-home

I think there is another angle as well, while we are all waiting and arguing about whether climate change is real, if its caused by humans or not and whether we should be doing anything about it, if it IS real, and if we CAN do something about it, trying isnt going to hurt us. I liken this to a patient in hospital, his eyes are shut and when we ask a question we get no reply, is he sick, or is he in a very deep sleep, its hard to tell; if we wait long enough he will either wake up or die, we will then know for sure, but if he dies then we made a big mistake. So lets perhaps try and intervene a bit more, just in case climate change is real. The only people against this are those with vested interests in fossil fuels.

Thanks! Yes i totally get what you are saying.. Anyone not hell bent on money as a means to an end will understand what you are saying here!

I hate how its become a political issue and a deciding factor in peoples election strategy. I find it crazy how many people don't get it and disagree it exists but I see them make a post on their facebook saying why is it snowing in June? Global Warming.

Hi, best friend. you forgot me. I give flag you a present for in the life.
Luck bad for your whole life. You crazy dog the whole life.

you flag me. your video all copyright. your photos all copyright. don't flag go on. note. you crazy dog.

Thanks for writing about this, it's really important. I hope these tags related to environmental issues will grow on steemit, and we can bring more focus to these issues.

Why is the earth getting colder?

is it?

Because the air conditioning is on too high!? ;-)

"It's high time we start discussing the real issues in the mainstream media..

Wonderful write-up! I especially agree with that last part.

I feel that the mainstream media has failed us because:

  • They continue to run their 24-hour reports on stories that haven't even developed new details yet, when there are plenty of pressing issues.
  • When global warming pops up in the news, they always take a neutral approach to the situation, as if they are scared to educate people. They need to drive facts through and call out blatant lies.

If those two things changed plenty of people around the world (mostly US) would be more educated on problems that actually matter instead of short sighted talking points.

Thanks for the high praise.. yes yes.. this is why I just do whatever I can do to promote Sustainability to as many people as I can reach out to. In the end it's us who have to make the decisions and then the rest can follow.

Thank god we have SO much more than just mainstream media these days!

You are quite right. The issue is not whether global warming is real, the issue is all about the pollutants of all kinds we are poisoning our one and only planet with.
