Roots Instruments From Around The World

I want to bring music to the masses.....lol.... First I want to say I do not own any of the photos or videos in this post. They are for demonstration only borrowed from the internet...
I have made many various roots instruments over the years. Unfortunatly pictures have vanished along with many other items through the years. So I will try to use stock photos to tell my story here.
Ilk start off with the Making a. It is also called a thumb piano for obvious reasons. They can be made out of many different things from gourds to cigar boxes. It is basically a box with a small sound hole with tines attached to the top sound board. The Times are different lengths to make different notes.

Obviously that one has been playing for a day or two..... They can have a very melodic tone to them and are very relaxing

Next we will visit the banjo which is basically the only real American made musical instrument. Born in the Appalachian mountains it was a basic homemade instrument and has grown to bluegrass and country and even rock and jazz....

Saying in the hills of Appalachia here is an ensemble that shows various home made instruments

And another mountain instrument is the mountain dulcimer. They can have 2,3,4 or 6 strings and are usually fretted in a diatonic scale which only has the major notes on it. This makes it ideal for children to learn on since there really is no way to hit a wrong note.

This next one is about as ancient as the cavemen. They have actually found cave drawings depicting people using their hunting bows as instruments. The mouth bow is in reality a hunting bow that is pressed against the cheek and plucked or strummed while changing the shape of your mouth to change the pitch. The first pic is from Africa and second in from the hills hence the name Appalachian mouth bow....sorry pics won't load.......and since they won't load how about a video...

This next one is from Africa and is called a neyatiti among other things. I was asked by a coworker from the area by Kenya to make him one and in reality it is a version of a lute.

Last but certainly not least is from the native Americans.... Known for the many types of drums and songs and reasons for the drums here are a couple examples....

And we will end this one with one of the most soothing instruments i know of. The flute is an amazing instrument and can be made from many different materials and in many keys.....
