Born in Detroit, Michigan, American songwriter and record producer, Lamont Herbert Dozier, officially began his career as one-third of the Motown's songwriting and production team, Holland-Dozier-Holland. While at Motown Records in 1962, the trio was responsible for producing hit records for The Isley Brothers, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas, and The Supremes.
After leaving Motown in 1968, Dozier continued to produce more hits at his own label, Invictus Records and Hot Wax Records. The roster of artists included Honey Cone, Freda Payne, Chairmen of the Board, and 100 Proof Aged in Soul.
While producing music for other artists, Dozier released his own 1973 debut album titled, "Out Here On My Own", followed by ten additional albums up to 2004.
In the '80s, Dozier collaborated with Phil Collins to produce the Golden Globe Awarded, Academy Award-nominated, Grammy Awarded, "Two Hearts" for the 1988 British romantic comedy, "Buster". This achievement is followed by hit records for UK's Alison Moyet, Mick Hucknall, and Simply Red.
In addition to cowritting and producing 14 US Billboard number 1 hits and 4 number one hits in the UK, Dozier was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He's also a professor at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music in the course of popular music.
There's no doubt of Dozier influence in music history, not only in his genre of specialty but also genres outside of his genre, namely hip-hop and R&B. Below I have listed a few of his songs that resonated with me (among countless songs), followed by how it was sampled.
