White Sun's Pristine Music "Hath Charms to Soothe the Savage Breast"
In his play The Mourning Bride, Michael Congreve penned the famous phrase "musick hath charms to soothe the savage breast" ; that is, music has the power to enchant even rough savages & raging emotions. The same can be said about the entrancing music of Santa Monica, CA based band White Sun. The group is composed of lead singer Gurujas Khalsa, turbaned instrumentalist Harijiwan and Emmy award winning composer Adam Berry.
I discovered their music while browsing Youtube for soothing sounds to calm my thoughts & feelings. My past was a turbulent one and once in a while a bad memory will crop up and generate hate and negative vibes and music is one of the ways I cope with them. One of White Sun's Youtube thumbnails showed a lady with what to me was an unusual headdress (I learned later that Gurujas and Harijiwan are Sikhs ) and I thought, "well that's interesting" so I clicked, listened and their music won me over.
After a few songs, I checked their songlist and noticed that most of them were either blessings, as in the case of Long Time Sun which is an old Irish blessing, or the song is a mantra which to my understanding is a verbal affirmation chanted to bring a positive change or mindset. Two songs I listened to back-to-back were like a one-two punch combo that knocked out the dark thoughts & feelings creeping in on me.
The first one is...
AKAL
Akal means "undying" and is a mantra spoken to honor the departed. But at the same time it can also be spoken to help new souls into the realm, as explained by Gurujas who teaches Kundalini Yoga in California(link). It's like both a salute to those who have come before and an invitation for the new souls coming into the world. The song calmed my thoughts and feelings, the jab that stunned the negativity from enclosing me.
And the second song that dealt the decisive blow...
Chattra Chakkra Varti
A mantra taken from the last four lines of the Sikh holy book Jaap Sahib and chanted or sung to remove phobias, fears and anxiety. No wonder I felt the bad vibes dissolve as I listened to the song. Such serendipity that I happened upon this song when I was about to sucked into a whirlpool of painful memories! Yogi Bajhan describes it as "the mantra for the heart center, it gives direct energy to it. When you are sinking, if you know this mantra and can sing it, you can totally recuperate yourself". It is said to be a mantra to make one experience victory.
It is heartening to know that amid the crass commercialism and mindless gunk churned out by the music industry, there are musicians who promote positive vibes and uplift our spirits.
In her acceptance speech at the 2017 Grammy Music Awards; Gurujas said, "We just want our music to make something better for somebody somewhere..." . Well Mission Accomplished White Sun, you certainly made coping with life better for me. Thank you.
